It was a good day for Bridport’s youth teams in the Dorset Cup this weekend with all four teams progressing to the next rounds of the competition.
Bridport’s under 10s completed and impressive 6-1 win away at Branksome United.
This was an excellent team performance and even though Bridport went behind they stormed back playing some exiting passing football. Elliott Crabb, Ryan Leader and Finlay Davy had excellent games in defence. Leader also got on the scoresheet. Cole Lydon Scored two goals and had an impressive game on the left linking well with Manny Cox in the centre who also scored. Morgan Napiers passing was much improved and he scored in the first half. Final mention goes to keeper Grant Rist who dealt with everything in the second half, including a magnificent save at the end of the game.
The Under 11s were level at 1-1 after extra time against Weymouth Cougars and went through in a nail biting penalty shoot out.
The Under 12s also beat a Branksome side, and held on at the end under great pressure for a narrow 2-1 victory.
The Under 13 Bees also won away at Broadstone with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
In league action the Under 14s had to fight hard for a 3-2 victory against bottom of the table Sherborne. The home teams goalkeeper in inspired form kept the score down with at least 6 top draw saves. Bridport went in front after great work from the in-form Kyle Napier whos perfect cross was met by Jon Paul Avery. His shot was parried and Owen Ward tapped in from close range. Bridport could not convert their chances and were punished by a break away equaliser. 1-1 at half time.
In the second half it was one way traffic and the keeper was winning his personal duel with Liam Sayers saving superbly at least 3 times. Sayers was brought down when clear through on goal without punishment for the defender. The resulting free-kick hit the wall and deflected for a corner. From the resulting corner 3 shots were blocked in a bit of a scramble and the keeper clearly pulled Avery back and a penalty was awarded. Man of the Match Napier cooly stepped up and planted the ball in the bottom left corner.
Bridport still could not see the game off and the unfortunate Tyman James diverted a cross into his own net and somehow the scores were level.
Luke Ward Jones set up Sayers with 8 minutes to go and he finally got the better of the keeper to grab a valuable three points.
In other results The Under 15s Beat Sherborne Town at Home 5-3 and the Under 16s lost 2-0 to Shaftesbury Rockies.
