Ring & Ride Rickshaws is the latest project from Bridport TLC, a volunteer-led initiative to reduce CO2 and Landfill waste in and around the Dorset town.
Bridport TLC has teamed up with local businesses and MAGNA Housing Association to provide two bicycle rickshaws, one for collections and deliveries and one for passengers. The Cargo Rickshaw has been funded by local businessman Clive Groves of Groves Nurseries. The Passenger Rickshaw has been funded by MAGNA Housing Association whose tenants will benefit from a low cost, carbon-free taxi service in and around town. “The service is primarily aimed at making life easier for many elderly, disabled and vehicle-less people” said Rosie Jones who is co-ordinating the scheme. “Trips to the shops, Health Centre, hospitals and friends sound simple but, to many people they can be expensive and a hassle. We hope that, as well as making an environmental impact, this project will increase the quality of life for many isolated people.” {audio}radio/HappySongSmall.mp3{/audio} Magna Housing Association’s Director, David Aldwinckle said “Our Community Initiative Fund which is managed by our tenants Area Panels, are delighted to have granted £4000 to this project. We are sure it will be a great asset to our residents, as well as contributing to lower our carbon footprint.” The Rickshaws will be ridden by insured and CRB-checked volunteers, licensed through WDDC. The Cargo Rickshaw will begin immediate use while the Taxi version will operate from the start of 2008.
