DON'T BE A FUEL E-mail

You may have already recieved this email about boycotting Esso or BP in the hope of reducing fuel prices. The message reads like this...

Image"...Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!"

MMMMM Petrol.... the cheapest thing you can buy in a gas station. 0.5 litre Evian Spring water = 79pence / 1 litre petrol £1 Morrisons fuel is substandard so I aint buying offa them plus they charge 20p for air.

Not wishing to be defeatest but I think they've got us over a barrel, sorry another pun. Cheapest petrol I've found is the Esso station on the A31 Wimborne bypass (currently 96p for unleaded) mind you unless you are going that way it's hardly ideal. Anyone know any localish cheap alternatives?

Not used to quoting Jeremy Clarkson - yet, he did point out on last night's 'TopGear' that if you think about it - £1.00 a litre for fuel is cheap. Oil companies drilling and drilling until they find the stuff is some godforsaken part of the world - then pumping it out of the ground, sending it halfway across the earth in a big tanker, refining it in some big plant then shipping across the UK in a tanker - then actually selling it to the motorist. Also - the tax on a litre is around 65p - so in reality the oil companies are actually selling it for 35p a litre. It's a bargain.

don't blame the petrol companies. blame the government.its nearly all tax's.if the government thought much about us country bumpkins, they would lower the tax ,so keeping the prices down.the petrol companies do all the work, spend millions and the government take all the money for doing nowt.just another tax hike.next time you see on telle, one of the government flying all over the world, on there own, in a plane it shows how much they care

Boycotting petrol stations or indeed supermarkets and even pubs is a waste of time, other than the boycotter feels better for it. The petrol companies are far too big to notice. I have always had a soft spot for Esso- who remembers the World Cup coins and Club Badge stickers from the 70s..... Anyway,if thats what makes you tick then God help you. Some of us live in the sticks and have to spend our money where it is easy too, not drive around feeling self important. BioFuels are the future- one day I hope we can fill up at our local Fish and Chippie. Cod and chips, and fill er up mate! Marshwood Hillbilly

How can anyone live without central heating these days? The oil for that isn't cheap - but it's worth it. Apparently there are still some nutters who live in log cabins on the moors without any heat. Crazy.

I've an attachment I bought on E-bay that explains in detail how anyone with a diesel vehicle can run their motor on the 'cheapest' old (used) vegetable oil....Legally too. (I've noticed there's regularly great big drums of the stuff down outside the Fish & chip huts in West bay..) Unfortunately I run a petrol motor. If anyone wants me to forward this attachment to them I will; or else I could forward it to the Ed, and maybe he could display it so anyone can download it. Now if there was a way I could run my petrol motor on chip fat I would be down there outside those chip huts under the cloak of darkness loading those barrels into me van. Too right I would.

The tax on fuel here is simply nuts. It won't put off drivers. It's just going to force them into crippling over-drafts. Just came back from the middle-east. We filled our 60 litre tank there for £9.45 Now that's value for money! That'll explain why everyone in Dubai drives Hummers and Porche Cayenne Sports! Oh...that and the fact there is ZERO duty on cars prices. Still...they haven't got our lovely green fields...well, not naturally forming ones anyway.

Time to slow down and save fuel, I've tried and failed. For 3 days I drove really carefully and got 47mph to the gallon (unleaded), got bored now I'm back to my standard 39mph per gallon. We were a 2 car family, now down to one, if I didn't need it I'd be on the bus! Driving will once again be a privilege for the rich.

Article says ""It's really simple to do!"" It's really simple to do because there isn't an Esso or BP in Bridport... These emails which crop up from time to time are a bit stupid though. If anything like this is to work it has to happen on a designated day (or days) so the company actually notices. Not that I care, I run a 1.2 litre 'cos I'm too broke to get a decent car, so I get good mileage even when I thrash it (which is often). I suppose this is the death knell for the flying car, I was looking forward to having a flying car, this is the 21st Century dammit, I want my flying car.

There's no way that boycotting Esso and BP filling oulets will make any difference on the price of fuel. Thats in the hands of Billy Nomates Gordon Brown, if the Government can lay its hands on £40 billion to bale out a bank then there's no way it'll reduce duty on fuel (Dick Turpin rules here). My vehicle returns 7.8mpg, it does so by getting all those goodies into the shops (even the computer you are using to read this), you know the ones.... 44 tonne HGV's, everybody hates them, nobody wants them near there homes. If I start boycotting certain fuel outlets, my mileage would increase, as would pollution. Boycotting doesn't work! The buck stops at the Governments front door, not the oil companys. If fuel goes up a penny a litre, it makes a big difference, last week my fuel bill was £949.36p. Three weeks ago it was £898.53. Who pays for this? You do, it goes on to the cost of transportation of goods to the shops.

Remember, for every penny increase due to oil price rise, the chancellor adds 3p in tax. very little of this money is spent on roads or ""Green issues"" and the bulk disappears into government coffers to be squandered and wasted.
