RESTAURANT WRANGLE

In support of the proposed Mediterranean Restaurant at the junction of East Street and Barrack Street - The idea that the Bridport Area Older Peoples Forum have objected to this has really annoyed me for all the obvious reasons..

Chez Cuddy isn't open in the evenings. The Bull is OK but doesn't have the Buzz that I imagine these two Chefs will create. Not everyone wants Chinese, Thai or Indian.

The supporting letters in the Wip Wop are excellent. Since when has the corner of Barrack Street and East Street been residential?

The Church over the road has been congratulated on opening a cafe for youngsters on a Friday night...

Why should the wishes of the majority be overruled by the views of a few miserable old gits? They had the Wendy James concert cancelled at the Leccy Pally and now they'll veto the restaurant given half a chance. Bridport for the living - not the nearly dead!

The attitude appalls me. To move into a High Street in a Market Town and then attempt to block music, eating places because they could be noisy then they shouldn't live in a Town Centre. Go Rural and complain about tractors, church bells and farmyard smells. We'd love an informal eating place with good pricing, casual atmosphere, tasty food in town. We don't have much choice at the moment. I hope when they re-submit their planning application they get it right and make it clearer as to their intentions.

The Hive and The Riverside seem to be a training school for aspiring chefs so there's always a fresh supply of keen young chefs ready to move on either to another venue or start their own businesses. Just walked past the premises in East Street and it really has the potential to make a lovely High Street Restuarant. It'll look great lit up at night, the waft of good food tempting us inside.

Bridport Older Persons Forum!!! now that sounds like a bundle of laughs, how old do you have to be to join? are you exempt if you have lived here for more than a couple of years? do you have to wear biege? is the reading of the Daily Mail compulsory? How have these frightened, grey folk managed to infiltrate the town to such a degree that there is enough ofthem to have formed their own forum? (how many in a forum as opposed to a group?) If any of ""them"" are reading, it is proposed to turn it into a restaurant, not a discotheque or brothel or crack den, but a simple quiet place to eat which will be across the road from a pub down the road from another pub and a cafe. and next to a busy newsagents. It is probbaly the word ""mediterranian"" that is bothering them because ""it does sound awfully foriegn"". This paranoid bunch of moaners and killjoys must be exposed for the narrow-minded, billious group that thay are. In being so ""terribly English"" in their approach and attitude they are displaying all of the reasons why Britain is no longer Great.

Pymore Goat, some excellent points raised. Probably the same clan of people who move to the country and complain about cockrels crowing, or those who move near the sea and complain about the seagulls etc.

I had a look at the place on Saturday night on the way to get refreshed at the Tiger. There is already the Lord Nelson and Chinese takeaway opposite, and within only a matter of yards you have The Bull, Montien, kebab shop etc. These people would complain if anyone wanted to open a business out in the countryside and 'ruin the views' etc. It's important for the town to have a vibrant centre with new restuarants cropping up now and again. We don't want to be stuck in a time bubble. Bring it on.

Thinking, in relation to oldies coming here, you know Poole has that strapline ""Poole, it's a beautiful place"" (debatable), ours could be ""Bridport, come here to die"". In a few years it could be revised to ""Bridport, don't bother we're all dead"" ""They"" will be banning table skittles after 8:30pm soon and smoking in enclosed public space, oh really, no! turn the lights out, where's me cider

Having just seen the Cardigan Club item I can't help but wonder if one of the Forum's Silver Surfers visits Bridport Radio then they will go straight to the item , presuming it to be an exciting knitware group . The concern is that once the news is out among the elderly community that an event for people who still have a pulse is scheduled , the miserable old gits will seek to stop it as they did the Wendy James gig . The proposed restaurant sounds great and would be perfect in the proposed venue and a welcome alternative. Hopefully the coffin dodgers won't succeed in turning the centre of town into a Chapel of Rest just yet !

tuzo(12) cheap jokes aside, Dorset has an aging population and a huge influx of retired people. Christchurch for example has the highest concentration of over 65's in the whole of Europe. Young people either can't get jobs here, certainly struggle to buy housing and on top of that have no fun. ""We"" wonder why kids roam the streets on one hand then on the other stop initiatives to serve them, cinema for one, Trick Factory another. We all have to live here

It isn't so much Age as Attitude. Some people are born Old with Attitude. I'm sure the new restaurant will be used by Older People. It isn't just for The Young is it?

You are absolutely right (MLI 14) I can't imagine the young would be able to afford to eat in there having probably spent all their money on drink, drugs and kebabs, and do we want them in there anyway with their neat trim bodies and enthusiasm for life. No we want dull older people dressed in sensible clothes, talking in muted tones and discussing the latest terrifying news from the Daily Mail that bacon eating immigrants will give us cancer and take our jobs.

I see the chefs have altered their plans - now going only for the ground floor as a dining area. They only want to open from 6.30pm to 10.00pm.

I really dispair when I see things like this happening.Bridport is a town and yet , as soon as someone tries to suggest that a 'town like' facility is opened in the middle of the town, it is objected too. Why do those people who live in the middle of the town , and I dont know how many there are, remain there( or move there in the first place. There may be different arguements for quiet , rural areas , or areas on the outskirts , but town centres should be lively and have facilities. Come on planners , there was nothing wrong with this proposal but, yet again the majority are being dictated to by the minority

I’m pleased that I’m not the only one that was bemused by the RESTAURANT WRANGLE. The Bridport Older People’s Forum’s rant appeared to be more about existing businesses in the area than the proposed restaurant. I chose to live next to a farm – could the Council please do something about the inappropriate use of tractors and the smell of poo in the field by my house. As for their comment - I notice that there is no mention of a bar area, which would appear at a later date - should we start complaining to the council about the new airport, after all, there is no mention in the councils town plan of an airport which will no doubt appear later. But I was particularly shocked by the comments of the town council - Inappropriate change of use in a residential area. IT IS IN THE TOWN CENTRE ! – if the council doesn’t know where the boundary of the town centre is please contact me and I will forward them a copy of the West Dorset District Council Development Plan. It clearly shows that the proposed Restaurant is in the town centre, although several nearby shops and food outlets aren’t. - Loss of amenity to surrounding residential properties. How can an empty shop be an amenity? The Bridport Town Councils own survey of the town centre states that there is a decreasing demand for Antique Shops and increasing demand for Restaurants and goes on to say that almost all of the existing food outlets are takeaways, pubs and cafes. - Unsuitable location for such a development. On what grounds? How can replacing an empty shop in the town centre with nice restaurant be unsuitable? The West Dorset District Local Plan also talks about the need to maintain the vitality and viability of town centres as many traditional town centres have been threatened by increasing competition from larger conurbations and out-of-town shopping developments. It goes on to say The concentration of a variety of shopping and other service uses open to the public within a town centre is a major component of maintaining its vitality and viability. The existence of buildings that open later in the evening, such as pubs and restaurants, can add to the centre's vitality by encouraging people into the centre after shops have closed. A flexible approach, rather than the rigid insistence on certain uses, is most likely to retain life in the centres during times of economic change. The Bridport Town Councils Strategy Statement includes the objective to improve communications with business. Perhaps the councillors could have spoken to Simon & Steph about their business proposals instead of condemning it as a 24hour drinking establishment in the local press.
