TRANSITION TOWNS E-mail

The 9th Lecture on Everything , on 25th October, 8pm, at Symondsbury Manor, will explore the concept of ‘transition towns’ and the philosophy behind it. The economic fantasy of continual growth, based on the current mechanisms of a consumerist culture, now has to face the reality of climate change and peak oil.

‘What would life be like in a post-fossil fuel world?’ Prof. Rob Hopkins asked himself when he set up the vision for what has since become the fastest growing grassroots movement in the UK.

What started as one man’s PhD and a permaculture project in 2005 in Kinsale, Ireland, has now spread across the world. In the UK there are already 50 initiatives to start ‘transition communities’ and a new proposal is made almost every week.

In his lecture – Transition Town Totnes – The Story so far’, Naresh Giangrande, one of the project’s founders, will talk about Transition Town Totnes, the first of its kind in England, looking at issues such as: the context for transition, the process of change, the ways to deal with climate change and peak oil on a local basis, the socio-cultural implications of the transition movement.

I'm planning to follow this up by a lecture called ""How to say a lot and do very little, whilst making a living"", a informative look at Bridders sub-culture and relationship with neo hippies and the pretentious middle classes. Hopefully by then the ""transition"" will have happened and i'll be back on me bike and getting a tan at the same time.

Totnes??? Bit like Bath without the expensive shops; Never never trust a town where the pigeons will only eat brown bread. Fossil fuels will not run out for the next hundred years, so lets carry on the way we are and just educate our children better on how to live in a fossil fuel free era.

All this talk of fossil fuels is rubbish, I went down to Charmouth and filled my car up with Ammonites and now it won't even start...

lol@rustic and brown bread, just about sums it up. To counter my earlier comments I do think there is a debate to be had, and indeed going on, BUT it is a shame people fail to engage with the politics and leave it to a few well meaning (and usually well off, you know ""daddy's money"" types) do gooders running a 40W light bulb from a wind turbine to power their homes.
