The 9th Lecture on Everything , on 25th October, 8pm, at Symondsbury Manor, will explore the concept of ‘transition towns’ and the philosophy behind it. The economic fantasy of continual growth, based on the current mechanisms of a consumerist culture, now has to face the reality of climate change and peak oil.
‘What would life be like in a post-fossil fuel world?’ Prof. Rob Hopkins asked himself when he set up the vision for what has since become the fastest growing grassroots movement in the UK. What started as one man’s PhD and a permaculture project in 2005 in Kinsale, Ireland, has now spread across the world. In the UK there are already 50 initiatives to start ‘transition communities’ and a new proposal is made almost every week. In his lecture – Transition Town Totnes – The Story so far’, Naresh Giangrande, one of the project’s founders, will talk about Transition Town Totnes, the first of its kind in England, looking at issues such as: the context for transition, the process of change, the ways to deal with climate change and peak oil on a local basis, the socio-cultural implications of the transition movement.
