TALKING RUBBISH E-mail

I can't believe that the council is still gassing on about where to put the new rubbish dump, - sorry, recycled waste transfer station - Gore Cross or Wych Farm; and now a new player in the form of Broomhills has come into play. Where the hell is 'Broomhills'?

Does anybody remember the old dump at Bothenhampton and where exactly it was? I live that way and would like to be assured my humble abode is sitting on top of it. There are some very strange smells to be experienced in the middle of the night. Sure as God made little apples, the way things are going,  Bothenhampton will be the next place they look at. Anyone remember that far back?

I remember the old dump, had a few meself in the environs over the years, nothing a large sycamore leaf couldn't sort. Broomhills is the site of the garden centre on the A35 about half a mile west of the Crown Roundabout. The landowner has been trying to kickstart development of the fields between the A35 and the leisure centre for years.....watch this space, I will be.!

Hope I can help out tinkywinky? Broomhills is the area on the left of the by-pass, 300 yards west of Groves Nurseries (in the Charmouth direction). In fact the garden centre there now used to be called 'Broomhills Nursery'. The old dump at Bothenhampton was at the very end of Long Lane, through the village and keep going as far as you can, about a mile. It was originaly a pig farm many moons ago and was then used from the 1950's by a firm called 'Foots', who had a farm & garden retail shop in East Street, as a coal and coke storage facility. That too, closed many years ago, early 1980's I think. Hope this helps? Bungle[I]Broomhills[I][I]' Broomhills Nursery'[I]

Bothenhampton bricks are like butter and Bothenhampton stone is like iron, my house is made of both so drilling a hole in the wall may result in your whole arm going through OR burning out your drill.

There's great spot for a new landfill near Wych-Hill called ""Palmer's PadŁ"" I believe. Isn't there a dis-used quarry up on the ridge above Burton Bradstock?

Many thanks bungle for the information. You must have been in these parts for a good few years. Luckily my abode is at the other end of Bothenhampton. Those smells in the middle of the night must come from a different source then. I shall have to investigate. Hmmmmmm.

The reason the dump was at Bothenhampton is because it was and is a dump. After they closed the tipping dump I had no more reason to go to that part of the parish but I assume, like all disused dumps, they push some pipes in for the methane to breath off and cover it with soil, no doubt to become a housing estate at some future stage. I had reason to blow the whistle on the dump once because I was shown by a dump scavenger mate of mine a whole pile of mashed up dead animal remains that had been bought up from a Devon rendering plant during the BSE crisis in the dead of night. I checked with a couple of nearby houses and sure enough there had been a lot of night time heavy traffic over the previous couple of weeks. The hacks at the Wip Wop were onto it in a flash and the company who owned the dump and knew full well what was going on, had to remove all the remains and take them up north to some incinerator as they should have done in the first place. The full glory of thatchers privatisation of things that should remain in the public domain like essential services water fuel waste etc, coming home to roost. her old man had a large interest in a company that wanted to import toxic waste into the UK as well if i remember rightly. So there you go, the toxins that are slowly seeping into the streams and water tables nearby the bothenhampton site can be blamed directly on the witch herself and all her dumb followers.
