Bridport celebrates the life of local artist ‘Fra’ Newberry Bridport has recently recieved a grant of £44,000 to celebrate the life of Fra Newberry. There will be an open Meeting at Bridport Town Hall on Wednesday 26 September from 5.30pm – 7.30pm. This will be an opportunity to find out more about the project; the Trail and the exhibitions and events that will be included. As well as general supporters we are looking for all sorts of expertise, help and assistance across a variety of areas, for example:
Talks; Guided Tours; Research; Sponsorship; Mounting exhibitions; Workshop support; Developing short courses; Stewarding; Administration Crystal Johnson, Project Manager said “This project is all about our heritage – art is at the heart of the project but we also want to look more widely at the social and economic factors that have shaped the Bridport we know today. Therefore, as well as arts specialists we are looking for people with an interest or knowledge of net making, boatbuilding or other aspects of our history. The Spirit of Bridport By Fra Newberry Francis H Newberry or ‘Fra’, as he called himself, was brought up and educated in Bridport. He went on to become one of the most influential Directors of Glasgow School of Art and a key figure in promoting Charles Rennie Mackintosh to international fame. In 1919 he retired to Corfe Castle where he painted a large number of his most famous paintings including those in Bridport Town Hall.The Newbery Trail consists of six related exhibitions alongside a wide ranging programme of talks, tours, walks and workshops that will explore not only art but other aspects of our heritage. |
