BUSINESSES WE LOVE E-mail

ImageThought it would be a good idea for Bridport Radio members to start passing on top tips about the tradesmen, businesses and other services that we like. At the moment I'm looking for a builder and an electrician that come with a good recommendation. All local businesses are entitled to a free listing on BridportRadio so contact us now to find out how. Meanwhile here are a few best of Bridport businesses to get you started...

Snooks Gentlemen's Outfitter, West Street - I love buying things from this shop. It's particularly good for hats, best thing is to explain to Mr Snook what you want a hat for and then let him do his stuff. Davy's Locker - fishmonger based on Dreadnought Trading Estate - fish so fresh it's relatives haven't even missed it yet. Solid advice and a glitter of gold teeth with every purchase. Smith & Smith I can't wait til I'm gentleman enough to buy something from them. The Riverside, West Bay it might be pricey but it aint pretentious.

I like getting my hair cut by Mark in South Street - but he's a camp, moody old bugger. Some days he's great - others he's a rude old codger. I like the dreadlocked young barman in The Woodman - can't remember his name. I love going to the Electric Palace ...

I thoroughly endorse your comments about Snooks Outfitters. There aren't many establishments as classy as this one left in the country. And Mr Snook is very helpful. Did you know he's into horology? (a particular pastime of my own)

Top class builder: Steve Turner, lives on Burton rd but don't have tel No. Friendly, fair and honest! Snooks are fab! Groves Nursery, always friendly Bridfish for some unusal food treats what about ones to avoid.......um: milly natty wildy solicitors for looking down on you

Snooks is indeed a highly individual shop - but does anyone under the age of 60 ever buy anything from there? One does see numerous folk of that age around the town seemingly decked out from head to foot in Snook stuff. I call them ""Snookers"" haha. I am very funny.

Posted by tuzo, on 15-09-2007 09:31,
I buy stuff there.. wonderful hat, bandanas and dinky tool for taking girl guides out of horses hooves, or was it for doing something with a pipe... good whatever the purpose. The fish shop in south street always interesting conversations about..... everything and the history of samphire.... a forgotten gem. Those pymore goats dont just eat anything I recall, they are waiting for quality treats i think?

I think Frosts is great. You can get lost in there for days!Heard loads of grockles saying they love it too! Double drive computers good too,the man doesn't look down on you when you don't know what its called and can recognise a 'thingy for a wotsit' when you describe it! Humberts are very snotty.""we have nothing you can afford""...Won't be going to them when I win lottery!

The Pymore Goats are very choosy about what they eat, that's true. I tried them with a carrot - but they weren't interested , however, I know chop a carrot up into small pieces- and they deem that suitable. They are also keen on Polo mints. Their names are Libby & Tilda.

Snook's Italian sweaters are a must for the more dapper Bridportonian. Just the shop to equip oneself for a trip up the limpopo. Martin Radcliffe is the man for your electrical problems, he looked after The George when it was refurbished. Balsons: sausages to die for. Leakers for a superb range of bread and forbidden cakes. The fish man on the market is a good chap. Frosts for The Telegraph and stationery to write to The Times. Also good for various culinary requirements, at very reasonable prices. Pete Gruitt is a good painter & decorator.

Steve's in East St for a haircut. Motor Care on the Dreadnought estate for your MOT. Bridport Record Centre for CDs, the guy on the market in South St for DVDs, he's next to the tourist information office on Saturdays (not sure where on Weds). Although I shouldn't have said that 'cos now you'll nick all the good ones before I get down there.

Posted by goccibos, on 19-09-2007 10:25,
bspoke bike shop in South St, top man Agree with motor Care (9) they actually try to mend things rather than doing a bolt off/bolt on job The timber place on St Michaels, usually get what you need at a reasonable price NOT; Macakkies for destroying Humphries shop front(oh why did you leave us)

I'm feeling rather skittish (must be this kilt !) and have to say I found Pymore's snookers joke terribly amusing and burst out laughing. (Got a few dirty looks in the office though.) However I wouldn't go Snook-ing for bananas Tuzo and also I'd keep it quiet about the dinky tool. While we're on the subject my wife bought a clapped out old garden chair for a huge amount of money, from a lovely woman in the market, that someone must have found lying on the floor of someone's shed (the chair not the woman)and now it is lying at the bottom of my shed - looks really good though, so I would recommend that stall.

i agree with the comment on davys locker, great fish and a good laugh

Snooks is a treasure chest of goodies and if you don't shop there I suggest you do the next time you are buying any clothing. The man is a class act and if you don't know what to wear or what goes with what he will tell you.
Good News for the papers and lottery and fags Ron and Sandra and the ladies who work there are always up for a chat and a laugh and his bargain bin is the best place in Bridport to get a good quaffable bottle of wine at a bargain price.
Longs in King St where you have to wait while they cook it fresh, Pauline is a hard working diamond who rules her frying floor with a steel fist in a velvet glove and the food is always superb.
The Hope and Anchor for obvious reasons and also the Tiger for a big place outside to smoke.
The Hare and Hounds at Waytown (near enough to be in bridport) for having the best beer garden view in Dorset and really good unfussy food.
The Bookshop for steadfastly remaining a miserable, albeit an affable, old git under the gaudy competition of Ottakers.
RK Tools for having stuff
Mike and Sue’s health food store up Vicky grove, for always being up for a grin and genuinely being helpful and cheerful.
Smith and Smith for rigidly clinging to the fifties
Rays Attic down Gundry lane, he is a lovely feller and the stuff he has got is great and sensible money.
The French market stall down opposite scummers on a saturday, mmmmmn those stinky cheeses gonna make me phat phat phat

Places to Avoid:
Pound stretcher cos somethings are more than a quid and most of it is tat
The Chinese and Indian takeaways in west street for being gut churningly awful
Alis kebabs for not cleaning up the spew and litter their customers are responsible for
There's that ponce infested, poor service, all style and no substance, notting hilly, poo pile that Bridport doesn't need.
Peacocks, because it should be called "One Wash" because wash this crap once and it will either fall apart shrink or dissolve
West Bay (apart from the Quartemasters)
because... because.. oh just go down and have a look. I rest my case.
Anything that describes itself as Gusto, or Gastro because it will normally mean incomers pandering to weekenders with overpriced gut chuck.
Pams because I always want to have a poo 5 minutes after being in the place and she is too expensive.

Posted by tinkywinky, on 28-09-2007 12:10,
Snooks sell the most amazing hankerchiefs that could double as tablecloths. Even if you've got a stinking cold, you wouldn't have to wash them for months, there's so much to them. Alternatively you could use the tablecloths at The Bull. You wouldn't have to wash them at all.

Made me laugh to read the front page of the Bridport News. ""Lives Before Flats"" - parents banging on about how dangerous it will be for their children if flats are built in Victoria Grove. The first thing these parents should do is tell their kids to walk on the bloody pavement and not swan about in the middle of Pymore Road and Victoria Grove. Try driving along between 3.30 and 4.00pm on a weekday - the road is full of these stupid kids walking in the middle of the road - and they seem genuinely astonished when a car appears. There is a perfectly good pavement - but these little morons like to walk in the road - on both sides - leaving about three feet for a car. One of these little sods will be knocked down - THEN something will be done about it.

Posted by The Man with the Badge, on 16-10-2007 19:47,
I didn't realise there were allocated parking areas, I just did as most do and parked on the side of the road, sod the zig zags, yellow lines, bus stops and junctions. If you can't beat them, join them!

Julian Graves won't be supporting local produce or the economy (apart from a couple of part-timers), and they've boystrously barged in on a town that already has 3 whole food shops, of which Fruits of The Earth is undoubtedly the best, so the best thing we can do is boycott the swines and make them realise what a mistake they've made. Let's do it.

Posted by Rustic, on 17-10-2007 14:18,
Julian Graves??? I don't know what old tat they flog but with a name like that I bet they have a branch in Notting Hill

BLIMMING HECK RUSTICHIO, we are shopping in the same shops !! Those guys that run the Health Food shop on South Street are also very nice. I popped int JD Witheredspoons yesterday to blag some of their free wireless access, I did feel obliged to have a cupofchino coffee, they had run out of milk, I suggested I pop out and get some for my coffee, they told me it was against health and safety regulations and the wireless was down. (I am turning into a ponce)PLANET MAD Cameras everywhere.........

Vote for me in the coming Mayoral elections and I will promise zero business rates on shops with less than three branches and treble for those with more than three branches. Simple solutions from your local simpleton. Cameras everywhere......

Posted by Beancounter, on 18-10-2007 22:49,
Glad I don't run a chain store. I'd want to avoid those treble zero business rates. Not sure why we need all these 'whole food' shops. I was going to joke about all my food being whole, but then realised most of it is sliced or chopped in some way. Perhaps there is a need after all. I already miss Paperchain, and that embarrassing moment when you discover that you don't like anything but you can't walk past the nice old lady on the till without buying anything. The one over the road isn't the same, you just don't get the same guilt trip.

Posted by tuzo, on 19-10-2007 12:14,
I Have seen them bending that rule(denzelpob) re stocking in somerfields for things.. The guy who owns Wetherspoons apparently called them after a teacher at school who told him he would never make anything of his life......

Posted by goccibos, on 21-10-2007 11:19,
Lilliputs, a sort of Fenwicks (bought a Duffle Coat there in the 80's, still going strong) V Humphreys without the blokes stuff. Any business folk here know how the betting machines place keeps going, it's always empty? tax dodge??

Posted by tuzo, on 21-10-2007 18:26,
or something rather like it (goccibos 24) they heat the great outdoors too... and men in suits and briefcase in and out... sort of reminds me of the empty shoe shops on the lower east side (New York) owned by Italian gentlemen?

Posted by Rustic, on 22-10-2007 09:33,
I did write a confirm or deny about the amusement arcade mentioning maffia and triads etc along with money laundering so I think the ed censored it. It has to be a scam.

Posted by goccibos, on 22-10-2007 10:15,
Just for the record i think that the business is legit and by no means used by Dorset's drug barons, who I don't know, obviously, cough. And; as a str8 male just tipping 40 why do I have the urge to click on the gay partnerships ad at the bottom (HAHAHA) of the page?

Posted by Pymore Goat, on 22-10-2007 12:08,
It seems impossible to get decent fish&chips in Bridport. Two outlets ( the same firm) - I have done business with both shops, but have been sadly disappointed with the fare. I have now given up. West Bay kiosks are hit & miss - and I don't always have half an hour to wait - the shop opposite the camping site seems to be the best of a bad lot. Hurrah for the kebab shop.

Posted by goccibos, on 23-10-2007 19:26,
Agree P Goat (28) Having waited for the one in Kings St to go catch the fish, cook it etc I got it back home a half cooked melting mess.....people will turn away. Top tip have Chinese chips (from Chinese restaurants) late at night, just have an edge of spice umm, mind you a few previous beers may have helped the flavour!

Posted by Rustic, on 24-10-2007 02:38,
You must be ""avin a laugh"" pymore goat, Longs in king street is great, the fact that you have to wait while they cook it fresh seems to add to the experience, and I hardly think it propper to expect fish and chips from a kebab shop.

Posted by Denzlepob_at_work, on 24-10-2007 05:14,
Dear Pymore Goat, although the chippy's in Bridport are run like a Formula One pit crew if you have a problem with the quality you could always ask the boss to change your fare, I have on one occasion had to ask Pauline to exchange my small battered fish, I felt like Oliver asking Mr Bumble for more, Pauline did not hesitate and apologised without reservation, I was a tremblin in me boots! Although it may lack rustic chip shop charm it is consistently good, a little tip for you, DO NOT TURN UP FOR AN EAT-IN WITHOUT A RESERVATION! She will eat you!!!! Cameras everywhere....

Posted by Pymore Goat, on 24-10-2007 15:55,
Well Rustic, I shall give the another go - but I haven't been impressed with their fare so far.I have found their fish and chips weak and greasy.

Posted by tuzo, on 25-10-2007 09:59,
will i? wont i? (like a chip)the suspense is killing me!! Not in Bridport (i know) but who has tried the HFW shop in Ax? (apparently he is having trouble paying his staff, some forty I believe) and was unceremoniously asked to leave Tesco's (filming without prior arrangement..... ) asking punters why they were buying non free range chickens

Posted by Denzlepob_at_work, on 25-10-2007 15:16,
I went in there today, looked quite busy, the punters were queuing up for the canteen at the back of the shop, £10 chickens, bloody hell, hard to taste the difference, I would love to not shop in Tescos but A TENNER jeez. There was a bloke selling elder cordial and the chef was serving steak and mushrooms on toast, why doesn't Denzille De Ville do a review?

Posted by The Man with the Badge, on 25-10-2007 19:37,
I think Longs do some of the best chips I have ever tasted. Their fish and sausages are sometimes a bit greasy tho, also Bridport Kebabs for the best chilli sauce ever (not necessarily for the fish and chips, but excellent on a chicken Kebab!)

Posted by darzet, on 04-11-2007 09:25,
i would reccomend mark the hairdresser in south street for his no nonsense approach to stroppy children, rude grockles & other pompus pratts who expect us all to kiss their a**es for being rude to us locals! punch&judy bakery for best westcountry pasties outside of cornwall & of coarse derek & allans cd/dvd stall for their massive range of discount stock & always freindly! put all this together with stomping dave allen in buckydoo square, a recipe for the perfect saturday !!

Posted by Pymore Goat, on 05-11-2007 07:53,
Mark, the barber in South Street, probably deserves a thread all of his own. He is indeed a curious chap. Bolshie/rude and as camp as Christmas - although these days it's a result to find him open.

Posted by chattykatty, on 05-11-2007 21:59,
Pauline told me she couldn't take my order 'cos had a coach party coming in when I tried to phone through an order for fish & chips - do they want the trade or not? Mark the barber is a darling - I worked with him many years ago and what you see is what you get with Mark

Posted by Rustic, on 06-11-2007 04:45,
Although Mark the barbers in south street is amusing, with the endless chattering gossip and the enigma of being both a married father and appearing to be a bit ""light on his feet"", what lets it down is that he isn't much of a barber. The last time I made use of his salon I came out looking like he had attacked my head with a blunt strimmer and to make matters worse he has the Daily Mail for his customers to peruse whilst waiting for the chop. Love the shoe shop next door though, pricey but top quality.

I haven't paid for a hair cut since Jack Abbot died. He put you in the chair wrapped up, pumped up, buzz cut, straight edge razor on the sideburns, soft brush and talcum dust down, wipped the cloth away, mirror out ""How's that then sir?"" ""It's very nice Jack"" I replied ""Can you do the other side exactly the same please?""

Posted by tuzo, on 06-11-2007 10:27,
julian graves health foods? What are those e number ladened dyed tubs of revolting ""sweets"" doing in the window...?

Posted by Pymore Goat, on 06-11-2007 11:22,
When I am in desperate need of a haircut and Mark is closed - I have done business with ""Steve's"" down East Street. He too is an interesting fellow - very keen on police matters. He told me he is some kind of plain clothed agent aiding the Police in their work. This is what he told me - he may be a fantasist of course. I have also been 'done' at Uppercuts in Bucky Doo - but alas it was by a dopey bird who kept banging on about holidays and DIY zzzzzzzzz. I have seen Billy Bragg in there - I hope he got a better cut than me,otherwise he may be preparing a new protest CD. As for Mark's haircuts' - I think he's a fine craftsman. He is big on horses, you know.

The King Charles on St Andrews Road for sunday lunch. Travel back to the 1970's when carpets were swirly, housecoats were worn by serving staff and comforting food was served in vast quantities. Expect vegetables well boiled, potatoes roast and mashed and don't go for the large portion unless you've been in training - you may never stand again. Beer not by Palmers is a real treat as well, especially the guest ales.

Let's not forget Mrs Barnes' St Swithuns Stores up North Allington. Hot pies, coal, bread milk - no booze mind. Oh and mind your manners - mrs Barnes appreciates pleases and thank yous.

Posted by Morning Loves It, on 09-11-2007 06:47,
I second Mrs Barnes as a Business We Love. If children don't have manners when they go in for sweets and drinks they certainly have them when they leave. Lots of leg-pulling and humour from Mrs Barnes herself and her lovely troup of ladies. I dare not buy tobacco in there as she tells me off.

Never been back to the Bull since it was revamped for the middle classes. Oh and Ed I promise to stop slagging the weird lecture season events thing in Symondsbury. Let them have their narcissus. Other great businesses; Skilling Stores for being open when everyone else is closed.

...Another faceless, middlecass, sofa haven. I always fear pubs that change hands, its often for the worse. Even a re-decorate can ruin an otherwise decent boozer. The Woodman will always be the best in Briddy. Freindly, anarchic and entertaining. Tis a pity they no-longer sell a pint of No Smoking at the Bar though. And, on Saturday, what better than a Coffee at The Chapel. Marshwood Hillbilly

Posted by andy head, on 29-12-2007 19:57,
D'you know I quite like the idea of The Bull. I know lots of local people who work there and all seem to enjoy it. I like the idea that there's somewhere to go to eat when you want to get dressed up a bit. I like the fact that it's getting described as quirky, innovative, racy, high-camp - not words often associated with Bridport. It's not somewhere I go regularly but I'm damn glad it's there - it could easily have been turned into another retirement home!

Posted by Carlito, on 03-01-2008 07:43,
I agree regarding the Bull (with AH), it could quite easily have been another death-den for the elderly. I just wish they'd get their act together in terms of organising their staff. Half of 'em don't seem to know what they're doing most of the time. Was there on NYE, which was pretty bouncy earlier on, but petered out very quickly in the wee small hours. A suprising and slightly interesting ratio of 3 visitors to every local though! Hats of to WEE for a fab gig.

I'd just like to mention the fantastic service i recieved with Matt Harvey at Crepe Farm, Symondsbury, what a friendly chap and very high quality metalwork at a very reasonable price, he also recommended the Ilchester Arms in Symondsbury which i also found to be a proper Dorset pub, even the Palmers beer was excellent !

Just to say so proud of Sarah & Co for setting up Moore than enough catering, we have hired Sarah a number of times - Golden Wedding and 21st parties for my son & daughter. The food is wonderful and so are the salads and dipping sauces and especially the horseradish sauce (which are all home made), the service has always been professional and courteous, would recommend Sarah to you for all your parties.

So many businesses to "I-love-Bridport" for - where to start?
I know! Fruits Of The Earth in Victoria Grove, "Never Knowingly Underfed". To hell with the cost, no chemicals in their comestibles.
Bridport Timber & DIY on the St.Michaels wasteland - sorry, trading estate - when you need a bit of wood or a left-handed screw or a brass hanging hook which won't fall down, unlike those sold by an equally helpful South Street merchant.
The glorious Cornucopia under the artists' coven in St.Michaels' studios. You never see anyone buy anything there but they spend hours picking stuff up, fingering it, putting it down, "I used to have one of those".
Does Bradpole count as Bridport? 'Course it does, then we must include those horny-handed heavyweights at Townsend's the all-purpose engineering suppliers on St.Andrews' Estate, who make stuff, mend stuff, break it and mend it again, for fun. My heroes.
I'd include my own business but I am a dour curmudgeon and a poor apology for a local trader, so I'm staying schtum.

Posted by andy head, on 08-10-2009 12:45,
Did you know Townsends also has a shop full of superb tools, gadgets and widgets of the most esoteric nature. I've been to Townsends for years and only found the shop a few weeks ago.

Kevyn Barratt electrical services. Kev is a marvelously, helpful, efficient, can do chap and charges eminently reasonable rates for his work. Anyone know a plumber who fits the same description?

Mark the Barber is great, as is the lad with the dreads in the Ropies. The Tiger is a cracking pub too. Cafe Bean is great. Full marks to The Lord Nelson for being an unspoilt boozer. Well done Palmers for letting Darren improve your ale.

A wander around St Michaels during the day is a wonderful treat, as you would never expect to see in a month of Sundays to see Kylie Minogue waiting in a workshop for a lift up to London. Well that what I saw in the workshop (back and above Top Gear) with Mike's new 2010 Kylie waiting for a lift to Madame Tussauds. Nigel's collection of all the LP's that I could never afford on my pocket money helps balance my 70's growing up. Old Albion if full of un-expected joys. I'm looking for a flag pole to buy the biggest Union Jack I have ever seen. The trick Factory is wonderful. If, doing flips on yer bike make's teenagers so Courteous why hasn't this Labour Gov't team up with Rayliegh at every schhool in England? Is the meeting to flatern St Michaels next week in West Bay?
