WHAT'S UP DOC? E-mail

ImageI haven't (thankfully) been to a doctor in three years. After a month of having a right old pain in the neck that was getting worse, I went to the new medical centre. Everyone complains that there aren't enough disabled parking bays, that the place is too big and soulless, that they can't find their way about and so on and so on. I was quite impressed with it. They even had my name up in lights. I went to see the doctor who was taking patients that Friday afternoon,

(all the other dozen or so were off on the golf course I suspect) and I can honestly say I have never come across a more useless individual in a white coat ever. I won't give his name in case he sues me, but he told me to take two aspirin and go away. As though I hadn't done that anyway (taken aspirin, not gone away -yet). He never examined me or tested my neck. I am going to ring the Practice Manager tomorrow and change doctors. The only problem is - which one shall I ask for?

Do any Bridport Radio readers feel they can recommend any of the ones playing golf that afternoon? If so, please reply a.s.a.p. I'd be ever so grateful as my neck is still killing me and they must get to finish their game soon.

TinkyWinky...the trouble is, if it's muscular (which is probably what he thought it was from whatever you told him at the time), then the answer is ""take some paracetamol and stop bloody whinging"". If it's not muscular and it's an infection or a swollen gland linked to an infection somewhere else in your body then you will have other symptoms e.g. a general sense of being unwell, light fever, fatigue etc. I suspect that you had none of these. No doctor is going to sign you up for physio on your first visit - so painkillers and a bit of time are the normal thing to try first (to avoid wasting resources on hypercondriacts). Oh and good luck changing doctors. The waiting list is about 5 years long, and I shouldn't think they'll prioritise you over someone who doesn't have a doctor AT ALL.

Well really, Carlito. A spelling mistake from the member who is always so helpful in pointing out the spelling and grammatical errors made by others on this forum. How can you live with yourself?

Best thing to do is go to Liza Adams in south st.She will sort you out.Last june my back went into spazm and I had to crawl into her surgery but she sorted it in a couple of sessions and couple of follow ups to keep kinks out.Great lady.

Thank you Rosie. I know Lisa and she is v. good and I am seeing her tomorrow. I am told my condition is called Carlitosis, the main symtom being a pain in the neck. As all my family is registered with the white coated, non-golfing prat I referred to, what am I going to do if my wife or children have to be seen by him? Is there anybody in the BMCentre who is worth consulting?

I have always been happy with Dr Neame given that he's working within the auspices of a ludicrously over-managed and poorly run NHS. Strange isn't it though, if you want to get something fairly minor actually fixed you need to go outside the NHS to a hands-on practitioner. I have a friend who is a Shiatsu trained body mechanic. I limp in broke and hurting, less than an hour of skilled manipulation and intelligent problem solving and I skip out mended and laughing. Wouldn't it be lovely to cut out the dead wood in the NHS and spend the money saved on making free effective healthcare available.
