Summer dance Scene - a dance summer school for young people aged 15 + years August 13 - 17 2007 Bridport Arts Centre, Mark Bruce will be teaching a day’s course of his own choreography on Friday 17 August as apart of Bridport Arts Centre’s Summer dance school.
Summer Dance Scene is open to local dancers aged 15+ years and there are now only a handful of places left. THERE ARE ALSO SOME FREE PLACES FOR BOYS. Dance experience essential. Mark Bruce trained at Rambert School and has choreographed professionally throughout England and abroad including work with Rosas, Introdans, Extemporary Dance Theatre and DJazzex. The Mark Bruce Dance Company was formed as a vehicle for his own dance theatre work, including Dance hall at Louse Point, a collaboration with local singer-songwriter PJ Harvey and John Parish. Mark is now based in Somerset and works extensively in the theatre as well as being associate artist of dance SouthWest. In 2005 Mark made Fever To Tell and his current productions include Sea Of Bones, Bad History and Green Apples. Main Information on Summer Dance Scene Summer Dance Scene is returning once again to Bridport Arts Centre on Monday 13 to Friday 17 August. For 2007, the dance summer school will comprise of an exciting mix of dance styles taught by professional artists from London and Dorset. Classes taught throughout the week will include contemporary, physical theatre, jazz and street dance. This years artists include Xavi Monreal (Barcelona), hip hop dancer and choreographer, who currently teaches street at Pineapple Dance Studios and Danceworks (London), Leanne King (England)– contemporary dance teacher at Central School of Ballet, The Royal Ballet School and Danceworks (London) and Niki McCretton (England)- award winning performer. Xavi Monreal will lead classes in street and hip hop - After years of experience of hip hop and jazz, Xavi has created an exciting and unique fusion where the “grace” of jazz is mixed with the “groove” of hip hop, rnb with a little old school and funk thrown in for good measure. Come and see what your body and mind can do! °Performer Niki McCretton will lead a day of contemporary dance based on the creation of duets, using lifts, balances and contact improvisation. Participants will be able to try out their own choreographic ideas to create pieces that explore the many relationships that two dancers can portray. Niki is an experienced teacher of dance and physical theatre and has created many solo and duet works of her own, which have toured nationally and internationally. ° Guest teacher Leanne King will be leading a day of contemporary and jazz dance and will explore technique and choreographic ideas. Leanne’s choreography and performance work is extensive and includes numerous performances in the Resolution series at The Place, London. Choreography for The Royal Ballet School includes, “ A Touch of Tango”, “ Another day at the Jazz Café” and “Shaman’s Breath.” Leanne has choreographed a large number of works for Central School of Ballet including, “ Hot reds and some Blue”, “Stabet Mater”, “Eleven” and “ Alpha Omega”.
The day lasts from 10am to 4pm and is for anyone aged 15 + years who has had at least three years dance training. It will be an intensive week of dance concentrating on various techniques and developing choreography. Summer Dance Scene has been made possible by funding from Arts Council England and West Dorset District Council. The cost for the week is £80 and £60 for siblings. There are also some subsidised places available on application and some free places for boys, but places are limited to just 20 for the week. The event is organised by Nikki Northover and is a part of Bridport Arts Centre’s youth arts programme aimed at increasing the accessibility of dance and theatre to young people.
