Worrying of livestock on agricultural land An incident of livestock worrying was reported recently, we would ask all dog owners to maintain control of their pets, whilst exercising them on or near to rural farmland, including footpaths and bridleways that cross grazing or agricultural land. We suggest avoiding farmland at this time of year, or using a tight lead when appropriate, as young livestock are especially vulnerable during this time of year. The Police can seize any dog thought to be worrying livestock, and may in some cases prosecute the owner or person in charge. It is worth being aware of the rights of the farmer or owner of the livestock, who may take reasonable steps to protect their animals, including the use of lawfully owned firearms if necessary.
