SMOKERS RESPITE

I went down to a well known Bridport pub for the quiz night on Sunday, the first day of the smoking ban. Apart from the two people who were organising the quiz and the barmaid, I was the only person in there and I definitely wasn't going to play with myself. Unless pubs do a heck of a good job to make smokers comfortable outside, they're all going to go the way of The Boot. Can anybody tell me what the best pub in Bridport is for outside smoking facilities? i.e one that has a little bit more than an open sided bus shelter or a leaky umbrella?

Stinking smokers are the one's that do it for me, you see them outside the supermarkets having one last puff before going inside and the one's in the pub who blow their stench all over you and let their fags burn under your nose when standing at the bar, i really can't wait till the 1st of july. Any chance of a countdown till the ban ?

Hopefully the police will see sense and prevent people standing around poisoning themselves and passers by with their disgusting habit on pavements outside pubs like George, B&B, spoons No 10 etc. There is no sadder sight than seeing a bunch of saddoes all huddled around each other outside a pub merrily hacking and coughing their way to a suicidal early grave together. The pubs with any sense at all will just ban it from the entire premises, gardens included, and then those of us who enjoy breathing fresh air would not have to cast our healthy eyes on to a bunch of addicts wheezing and desperately ""dragging on a fag"" to get their fix whilst gathered together in a stinking group for moral support. Pathetic stinking junkies hanging around in doorways used to be something to read about in Big Issue, now it is you saddo.

The government should issue all food outlets with Electronic Scales and Body Fat Calculators and if the diners-to-be are over the recommended healthy limit then they should be given the alternative Non-Chip Menu. All sellers of alcohol, either over the bar or in sales outlets, should be issued with Breathalysers and Blood Test Kits enabling them to refuse to serve booze to anyone over the limit.

I like the way the Government has made it a ""self policing"" excercise, by offering landlords,landladies,and restauranteurs the opportunity to pay fines of up to £2,500 if they allow punters to smoke within their premises!! Clever eh? i see this a case of double standards, when you think how much revenue our Government gets from tobacco!! hypocrits, i say, the lot of em, if youre gonna ban smoking, ban tobacco, it patently obvious, innit? cheers rustic, i love your inane comments here wouldn't be the same without you,hehe

Rustic, I am not a smoker, but you seem to be very defensive and accusatory for a non-smoker. I think it's bizarre to outcast 35% of society (probably more in Bridport) because of a tenious (and currently unproven) link between passive smoking and lung cancer. When doctors say that they estimate 600 deaths a year are caused by passive smoking, they are guessing on circumstancial evidence. SIDS victims that lived with smoking parents make up at least 50% of that figure. In addition, pubs will absolutely STINK. I haven't been into one yet since the ban started but I bet you they absolutely REEK of stale beer and cheap disinfectant. People will come to realise that tobacco smoke in small quantites was subconciously making the environment more cosy and familiar. Now, the environment will seem bland, doggy, beery/cidery and B.O.y. NICE. The best place to be will be in the George when they have an open fire in the winter, and the wind swings around to an easterly and the bar is filled with wood smoke.

I am amazed at the leniency of the fines that will be handed out to scum landlords that allow fag junkies to pollute the clean healthy lungs of others on their premises. Carlito how can I be defensive, and yet at the same time, accusatory in my argument that smokers are junkie saddoes that either are invcapable of or too stupid to get help. It is an accusatory statement of fact and doesn't need defending. In answer to the question asked at the begining of the article, I have just read of a place that the sputum hacking, odorous, littering fools can all congregate and indulge in their heinous habit together, ""the memorial gardens"", if you can make it up the hill that is.

As for the smoking thing, its good for me cos i only want a smoke when i'm in the pub, now i cant, -and that makes me glad that my kids won't come to associate pubs with fags and get drawn into that whole stoopid social scene. Carlito, i don't smoke either... except for fags...(??)

As a non-smoker I think the ban is ridiculous. Yet another example of big brother thinking for us. Non-smokers / anti-smokers may be celebrating regarding the ban but they should ask themselves 'what will be next?' and will the next thing apply to them?

I disagree with the comments of Rustic at no. 2 above. I don't smoke and find a room heavy with cigarette smoke unpleasant, but see little to take offence at with people smoking in the open air. One would expect that with reduced opportunities to smoke socially, smoking will gradually decline. Meanwhile, for many pubs to continue they need to keep as many of the present customers as possible, including those who are smokers but unable to smoke on the premises. To say that if they pop outside for a cigarette, they should be pounced on for drinking in a public place is surely not only intolerant but inappropriate in these circumstances. Bear in mind that if smokers stay at home, children and other non-smoking members of their household are going to be exposed to increased levels of smoke, presumably to their detriment.

Well RUSTIC, i hope you and your non smokin friends are happy.But i want to know what happened to you all on sunday?. As it was the first non smokin day i thought i would of needed a ticket to get in any of the pubs in town. We were led to believe, you, non smokers were all queuing up to get in these smoke free pubs. But alas ,the only ones in were some of the usual smokin clan.Spoons had around ten people in, but Mr Weatherspoon was ahead of the game and gave us smokin, in the garden.So put on your specks Rustic ,there was no one out on the street (you can't blame the smoke, hardluck).And i hope when mr spoon puts our patio heaters out there, you and your friends stay inside.He should put a sign up saying smokers only. Carlito ho! ho! ho! ho! thanks for the info, I am now going to install a bigger bath and I might even get a hot tub. There are already enough children in the world coming out of our women and taking our jobs. Went up the pub last night had a good few, woke up this morning and my clothes only had my normal ""animal musk aroma"" and didn't STINK like the bottom of a whores handbag as they would have done before the somking ban. Denzlepob , what the fark are you on about, water? god? surely you mean COD. Remember that if god wants us to beleive in her then she should exist.

The way I see it, it's choice innit? If you choose to smoke, you smoke, if you don't you don't. I choose to smoke which, by looking at 'Rustic's Rule', means I should be smited down and suffocated by a giant nicotine patch. I'm not fussy about whether it should have been banned or not, I just pull pints (and the occaisional intoxicated woman-shaped thing (perk of the job)).

Men carry handbags as well denz, except that we call them by the rather masculine and testosterone image conjuring name of ""MANBAG"" (but real men and women know what they are) It would only have confused the issue and detracted slightly from the point I was trying to make had I mentioned manbags. It was an unintentional slur on all the hard working males members of the pox doctors assistants profession and I would like to apologise for any offence caused but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Shagsack - who ever you think you were with outside No.10, it certainly wasn't me. I was in Oxford all weekend visiting rellies... Smoker's have the best deal really. The only smoke-free havens for non-smokers are bars, pubs and taxis. The rest of the outdoor world is now officially ""SMOKING WORLD"". In terms of land-rights, smokers win, hands-down. Soon you will see non-smokers huddled together inside doorways of shops and pubs, and when they think the coast is clear, sprinting along the pavement to their next safe haven. Smokers have reclaimed the streets!
