ECO HOLMES E-mail

Eco house
Five ecologically sound homes at Allington in Bridport have been given the Low Energy Green Light despite objections from local residents suggesting that the traffic levels in Allington were already too high, now the threat of silent electric cars mowing down our young folk is an ever present and growing danger.

We were there
Bridport Radios Guv’nor and myself (Scoop) recently attended a seminar on Eco Homes at Bridport Town Hall to see what all the fuss was about.

Image
Carbon Cycle
No Barbies
The homes are "carbon neutral" which means no barbecues can be held there. Carbon offsetting as part of a "carbon neutral" lifestyle has gained some appeal and momentum mainly among consumers in western countries who have become aware and concerned about the potentially negative effects of energy-demanding lifestyles and economies on the environment. This has contributed to the increasing popularity of voluntary offsets among private individuals and also companies. Offsets may be cheaper or more convenient alternatives to reducing one's own fossil-fuel consumption. However, some critics object to carbon offsets, and many have questioned the benefits of certain types of offsets (such as tree planting), and other projects.

Garage blight
Approved
The scheme was approved this week much to the chagrin of locals who were against the new build. The terrace of five two-bedroom "zero carbon" houses will be built on a site currently blighted by 30 or so garages.

Rebecca Loos
The homes  will benefit from futuristic energy saving devices such as an eco-friendly wood pellet fired boiler, solar panels, organic paint and mud plaster, with rainwater collectors for flushing the loos and washing the new inhabitants Toyota Priuses (a flimsy car made from cardboard, plastic and Duracell batteries) .

Hideous
Bridport town council plans committee chairman Ros Kayes described their design as "hideous".

Keepin it carbon neutral.

So does this new Carbon Neutral policy stop us from burning down Weekenders' homes? Or is that offset by the reduction in emissions from a lack of being swamped by their W**ker-Tankers every weekend?

They won't look so bad when the local youth have spruced them up with some graffiti.

It would seem that our colourful Lib Dem rep Ros objects to these eco homes. I always had her down as a bit of a bunny hugger so I am suprised at her objecting to environmentally freindy and I assume low cost housing. Most forward thinking local people that I know would welcome low cost eco freindly housing. Does it matter what they look like if they are tucked up behind where the old garages are and no-one can see them? Souldn't council members be looking for the possitives in the design idea rather than digging a trench of negativity and adopting a hostile, unhelpful and obstructive position on what is basically a good idea.

I'm afraid (Rustic 2) £250,000 a pop is not lo-cost housing. In the end shouldn't all houses be built eeco stylee?

I am glad they arn't new houses built in old fashion styles, to carry on building mock Georgian, Mock Edwardian and Mock Victorian buildings is just plain daft, houses in the mock style are boring. Seems like housing is the only thing that has not moved forward in this country. Has anyone seen www.baufritz.co.uk I am not a tree hugging ponce but I would like something different, the Eco side of a building means lower fuel bills for me, it's expensive enough living in GB PLC, watch out for this carbon stuff the Government is ramming down our exhausts it's just another tax collection ploy. I would like a house on top of Colmers. I stumble around in the dimly lit world of energy saving bulbs in my rented paper thin Mock Shite box with no garden.

two hundred and fifty farkin thousand, the mind boggles. I had no idea, for some reason I assumed that they were a low cost project to give younger local families a chance. You are absolutely right though draino about all houses being built that way so we capture rain water and use it for the bog, solar water heating etc. It doesn't make any sense in that if you can afford 250K then you can probably afford the lecci bill that comes with leaving a few lights on and windows open when you have the heating on. So was the excitable lib dem member calling them hideous on the grounds of cost or taste. It all souonds like a cynical scam by the developers to come up with the phrase ""eco"" so who could possibly object cos if you do it is you who are responsible for cute adorable polar bear puppies drowning because of the melting ice caps.

In relation to my last post I don't actually know if baby polar bears are called puppies, but I am sure you get the drift. Before the days of the evil reign of the bitch Thatcher we used to have a good supply of social housing called council houses. When the older ones were built they nearly always had a rayburn so that when you had a fire it heated the hot water and you could cook on it. At the least they had a back boiler in the front room fire. OK OK so those were the days of burning tons of coal and the associated acid rain etc but at least they were thinking about utilising the energy provided. They also had quite big gardens which if properly maintained would provide plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit most of the year to supplement the family diet. That was of course when we still had enough time to tend a garden for a few hours a week rather than be stuck on a treadmill trying to earn enough money to buy all the time saving gadgets that would transform our lives.

I like you Rustic, I reckon we could share a plot.

Judging by the map on Ecos Homes website they are due to be built before 1987
