*Sigh* What's worse than calling Bridport Notting Hill-on-Sea? I'll tell you what - calling it "Hughville". The Guardian ran an article last Saturday called "Lets all move to..." and yes there we were again, much to the delight of (and probably sponsored by) estate agents, who seem to be the only ones making anything out of this broadsheet barrage of our beautiful burgh. Read the full article here...

One of the percieved probems of weekenders is that they are pushing house prices up, but who can blame them for wanting a little piece of paradise, these people (Realworld) are not the problem. The problem lies with the fat cat idiot in the local government planning department and his mate the estate agent.

I'm bored of this now...

How grim is that, we have now been reduced to a bunch of name dropping sound-bites. it has to rank as the worst one I have read yet.

Local Inn=Boutique Hotel? Gruesomely Named=Jurassic Park? 16th Century Butchers and Tea-Shops? This is the most offensive article about Bridport I have ever read. I was in the Boutique Hotel on Tuesday for lunch. There were several young couples who were evidently staying there. They looked very miserable. I don't think it had anything to do with their relationships or the weather. More to do with expectations fed to them about the hyped up image of Bridport. here's Trip Advisor Reviews on The Bull. I'm not surprised they all looked miserable. We were the only 'locals' in there.

What did I tell you ? There's no point in resisting - Bridport is THE place for funky metropolitans. I don't understand why you lot are so negative. The money that will come in this summer from visitors who have read all these articles will make the town a better place. As the article says, this is just the beginning - the 2012 Olympics at Weymouth will bring in many, many more people looking for a nice spot for a second home.

Good Morning, morning loves it, the comments on the link you posted say it all really. I have had occasion to use the boutique hotel on 4 occasions. The last one was a sunny day in may and my partner and I thought it would be a jolly jape to have a nice glass of something chilled in the courtyard. After waiting for 13 minutes (I counted) I went up to the bar and asked them to explain the rules to me, ie, do I get served at the bar or at the table, a rather sanctimonious little twerp, with the sort of a face that would look good bouncing off a wall, informed me that I would be served at the table, I asked if that was likely to be any time today. ""someone will be with you shortly sir"" says the twerp. They weren't as we were no longer there. It wouldn't be so bad but it has happened every time I have been there. Like it says in one review ""all style and no substance"" I am not surprised that yopu were the only locals there MLI as it is hardly a warm, inviting local atmosphere, much like the article.

I am SO bored of this. p.s. - what's that tripe about Molly's and Jemima's? I know Molly AND Jemima and they are both VERY different people indeed!

Why Real World anyone would think we are all getting rich off the back of you weekenders, the truth is not everyone makes money from tourism. In fact it is a much overated, overused, excuse for not closing our borders and declaring Dorset an independent country. If you think the 2012 olympics is going to be a financial shot in the arm for the area, think again - it's going to be nothing more than an inconvenience for many people for the brief time it is on.

To quote realworld ""Bridport is THE place for funky metropolitans"" I think he spelt funky wrong. All these badly researched articles are neither here nor there, the question remains, ""with the accelerated influx of new people, particularly weekenders, is Bridport becoming a better or worse place to live for the people who have decided to make Bridport their home or have always lived here""? I am looking hard but I don't see much improvement but then I don’t have anything to judge it against apart from happy memories.

Realworld - YAWN.... The money that comes in this summer will keep KIOSK owners in business, the odd Boutique hotel in business, the odd bar in business and the council(s) in business. For the rest of us, you are an irritant. You are but a sock that has turned itself in on itself over a hundred times and catches you out when you're late for work. You should all wear little IRRITANT badges.

Posted by Real World, on 29-06-2007 11:17,
No, you're not ALL going to get rich. The ones who get off their backsides, realise it's no longer 1974 and actually understand that things have changed - open a business, offer a service etc. Yes, I mean WORK - those people will make a go of their lives. Those of you who decide to get up at 11am, wander into town and spend the rest of the day and evening sitting in a pub with like minded souls decrying everything and anyone who isn't equally hopeless as you - well, no, you won't see any benefit from anything, ever. But that's how you like it - because all repsonsibility is taken away from you, and you can carry on wasting your time. Blame the tourists, the second home owners, the council, the government...... never see yourselves as others see you. Idle and useless.

Real world - you complete ass. I am, as many other BridportRadio members are, a hard working member of the community who gets little or no benefit from weekenders such as your ignorant self, it is you who chooses to see us as lazy carrot crunchers and if it wasn't for this website you would never be able to be so rude for fear of a bloody good pasting. *hoick ptooi* in your eye.

Difficult to spend all day drinking in a pub here in Bridport RealWorld - working or not. Pint of lager and a glass of wine costs over eight quid, tourist prices, so yes I do blame these prices being aimed at the Tourist Pocket. I travel around the UK a lot and apart from City Prices never paid over eight quid for two drinks in an ordinary local pub. Aren't you assuming a lot about the people who post in here telling us to get off our backsides? But of course - I'm sure you get off yours for under six quid an hour eh?

Well said Draino, thought it loads but couldn't spell it! 'Real world' is sooo the wrong name for you(RW)Mr Hughes Unit would suit better.

realworld you are a pleb and your last post 10 proves it beyond all reasonable doubt. People who work do not always ""make a go"" of their lives as they are two busy working and scrambling about desperately to keep a tenuous grasp on the property ladder. Alternatively they are so engrossed at selling there labour and precious time to companies and corporations who chew them up and spit them out at the end of it without so much as a thank you. Their lives are over before they have chance to realize that it has passed them by while they have been working. Your overt capitalistic approach never ceases to appall me and your moronic insistence that one has to work, or try to get rich, to be considered as useful in your narrow minded world is worthy of a bitch slapping.

Realworld in your efforts to whip up another backlash you are making yourself look like an idiot. You may have a nice job and be ""upwardly mobile"" but based on what you post here, you'd better hope you never find yourself unemployed as I can't imagine anyone in their right minds employing you ever again. Crawl back to your hole and rot there you stinking excuse for a human. ___ ....ummm - steady - Ed

You do appear a rum cove realworld chap. In my mind some one who gets up at 11 and spends the rest of the day in the pub HAS made a success of their lives. If you have to work all week to achieve this for one or two days of the week you must be doing something wrong. And why, might I ask, do you not stay in the great metropolis with your friends at the weekends ? Have you no social life or work colleagues to associate with ? Could it be that they don't want you either?

beyond measure by the latest Grauniad piece, have always despised this attempt to fill column inches with this patronising crap and have really felt for the poor sods whose little pieces of paradise have been featured over the years. Knew that he would get around to us eventually but hadn't anticipated it being SO appalling. I know that you have rules about abusing members but wish that Realworld would just ...no I can't bring myself to type it. His effing assumption that the tourist sterling will inevitably help everybody is just SHORT SIGHTED. It doesn't seem that any amount of reasoning will get to him. People love Bridport because it is friendly, small, old fashioned and beautiful. If you change the town's individual character into any other number of tourist traps you may as well stay in Notting Hill

I went to the Food festival on Sunday, andone of my party happened to mention to someone in the tent that I was ""Realworld"" from the Bridport Radio website. Within a few minutes, what can only be described as a drunken rabbleled by a chap in red tartan trousers and wearing a red Pays de Basques hat harangued me for my views. I was basically chased out of the Food festival. I am therefore resigning from Bridport Radio I am cancelling my account and I will not return. I am also thinking very seriously of selling my home in Bridport. The behaviour of the people at the Food festival was deplorable. You know who you are - you are a disgrace to the town.
