Dear Sirs, re: the Boot calling time. Palmers dont seem to understand how to run pubs. They have totally missed out on the massive interest and market for local food production, and the expectations of locals and visitors to have thriving Dorset village pubs that show off the local wares. I am not wearing rose tinted spectacles, healthy local produced food and drink is a boom industry, and is a major draw to a growing sector of our tourism.
Unfortunately, our local brewer has got it all wrong time and time again. When they attempt to 'invest' in their premises the results are feeble at best, laughable at worst. Their 'vision' of the modern pub has seen the ruination of many individual and historic buildings. The Bridport Arms and The George are now the ghastly charm-free twins of West Bay. They are desperate to wreak the same unimaginable savagery at Seatown's Anchor Inn, removing the custom of a parking season ticket to villagers until they are granted planning permission. The Tanners, now 'dark' again, is undergoing its third 'refurb' in the years since 'The White Lion' was renamed. Different name, same old story. The Ropemakers has never got the formula right, and would just as easily be burnt to the ground than reopened, as it so nearly was several years ago. Palmers and Mr Woodrow(?) have squandered a tremendously valuable resource with this glib assertion that local pubs are 'not viable' that they never fail to parrot out before each closure. They then make it impossible to challenge this theory by placing covenants on the property, preventing anyone else subsequently running a pub in the same building. A very neat trick, and a very selfish and spiteful action. Action that has upset and angered many locals. It has contributed to destroying any social and community gathering in many villages: Halstock, Toller Porcorum, Morcombelake, Netherbury, Bothenhampton, are all victims of this policy. Melplash, Stoke Abbot Eype maybe, could be next. Bridport too has been stripped of many potentially viable pubs. Since the beginning of the 80's, The Five bells, The Fisherman's, The Three Mariners, The Ship, The Volunteer, The Lily, The Plymouth, The Toll House, The London, The Traveller's Rest, The Masons have all proved unviable, there may be more to follow the Boot. A pub that was long, long overdue a modest injection of cash to update it. When Devenish Brewery closed in Weymouth, their notable pubs sold off to independents have continued to thrive. The Tiger, The Hope and Anchor and The Greyhound are not in danger of closing. Palmers could try to make their pubs more 'viable' by treating their landlords better. It is no wonder they cannot find anyone willing to accept their contracts, and the occasional absconder. They even sting their tenants for large percentages of the profits from selling food, without assisting at all in the running of the kitchens. It seems they are either taking the wrong advice, or are purely studying balance sheets and dont understand their customers, ultimately, expecting people to dig deeper each time to bail out their poor judgement. - Incidentally, their pump prices are a disgrace. Bridport is now more expensive than London. But, it's not all bad news. If they carry on like this, pretty soon they will be out of the town altogether, although we will have to build new pubs! Contrary to the local councillors assertion, it is not home drinking that is killing these old pubs, it is overpricing and poor facilities that put people off going out. But it is usually not the landlord's fault. Bad management starts at the top. The pubs that are full in Bridport are the independents. I know this because I live in the centre of town, and there are plenty of people still going out for a drink in the evenings. The independents (and the conglomerates) seem to be able to make selling alcohol 'viable'. In fact with the Boot closing, they now outnumber the Palmers outlets. Perhaps Palmers should stick to what they are good at, selling or renting property, and sell their charming thatched brewery to someone who can actually organise a **** up!
