BOYCHILD E-mail

A groundbreaking arts and science project involving one hundred Dorset males aged 0 – 70, examines what it means to be male and how maleness is perceived in society today and culminates in a multi-media performance event at Southwell Business Park, Portland on Father’s Day, Sunday 17 June 2007.
Entitled BOYCHILD and funded by The Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England, this eighteen month long project is led by artist Mark Storor and Bridport based producer Anna Ledgard in collaboration with Dorset County Hospital Arts in Hospital Project.

Workshops with boys and men have been held in primary and secondary schools, HM Young Offenders’ Institute at Portland and with expectant fathers in an antenatal class.  In April men are invited to join a workshop with master baker Aiden Chapman. Some of the stories and experiences of the hundred males involved will be used as the basis of the public performance with added elements from composer/sound designer Jules Maxwell and filmmaker Peter Snelling.
The audience will travel around the corridors and spaces of a former MOD building, Southwell Business Park, experiencing a journey through the seven ages of man in a specially created environment. Comments producer Anna Ledgard,
“BOYCHILD is uncovering rich ideas and images. We are inviting boys and men to map their experiences, articulating powerful messages and concepts that provide revealing insights into what it is to be male in the 21st century”.
