RURAL RACISM? E-mail

i wonder if any of you can shed any light on the peculiar and thorny subject of racism in Dorset?

I have lived in this county for over thirty years, and have encountered it on several occasions. What surprises me, is who they are... upstanding folk: farmers, shop keepers, voluntary workers.....is goes like this; a black man crosses the road at the lights and the person in the car sitting next to me says "there are a lot of THEM around these days?".. this is presumably to check out my view... I met a BNP rep on rememerance sunday... only knew this as he had an interesting little badge (enamel furled union jack) and i commented on it.

Well if anyone can help me here? racists or none racists I would be glad to hear? What is IT ALL ABOUT??

Is there an existing homebrew/wine circle in West Dorset? Seems like there is enough interest for one. My husband and I are eager to start making our own and would appreciate some advice on the topic.

I like to think I'm not racist but I do say 'shall we have/go to the chinky tnite' but thats the food or place if it's person who is chinese I always say 'the chinese man/boy etc. When I worked with someone who came from thailand if asked who ..... was, I always said 'the lady with the long dark hair'. Mind you 'them' also gets said about anyone that is different.eg Drug addicts, hippy types, gay people, incomers, vegetarians, legging wearers etc

well i suppose to a part time resident feeding those 'rats with wings' might seem like a good idea -(especially when, after inviting them to SKWAWK!!& SHiiite day and night on your roof you sod off to where you really live for 90% of the time -leaving your neighbours with your generous gift)...feeding them is nothing short of moronic and only encourages them to come back again -(this goes for the seagulls too!!)

Anyone remember the Bill Hicks alter-ego ""Goat Boy""? OMG! that was hilarious. That man was a genius. Here's a few quotes (not Goat Boy Quotes...that is too obscene!): “I love the Pope, I love seeing him in his Pope-Mobile, his three feet of bullet proof plexi-glass. That's faith in action folks! You know he's got God on his side.” “No, I don't do drugs anymore, either. But I'll tell you something about drugs. I used to do drugs, but I'll tell you something honestly about drugs, honestly, and I know it's not a very popular idea, you don't hear it very often anymore, but it is the truth: I had a great time doing drugs. Sorry. Never murdered anyone, never robbed anyone, never raped anyone, never beat anyone, never lost a job, a car, a house, a wife or kids, laughed my ass off, and went about my day.” “We all pay for life with death, so everything in between should be free.”

I would just like to endorse Carlito's views on racism in Dorset and offer an example. Several years ago my mother invited some friends from South Wales to stay with her in West Bay and after meeting them, her brother took me aside to ask whether one of them is ""you know....coloured?"" My uncle is a Dorset farmer and had at that time NEVER met some-one with a naturally darker skin and was, as Carlito suggests, curious. I don't have any problem with people recognising that other people come from other cultures and have originated from different countries, but I do have a problem with those ""others"" not being welcomed or being thought of as any way inferior to our own glorious unsullied West Dorset stock. p.s. The name Carlito has a suspiciously foreign ring to it, are you ""local""?

Posted by Carlito, on 23-05-2007 07:43,
Grapeivy, a might warn you that endorsing any of my views may land you in Tuzo's bad books, but thanks for understanding my point. Tuzo, I believe that Shagsack was referring to Seagulls. How about using your freedom of speech and point the finger at a few individuals in Local Government? I personally don'y pay much attention to the Town Council. They're a lost cause! To me they are Mr & Mrs Overpaid, Mr Curruptable, Mrs Does-Nothing-Accept-Open- Coffee-Mornings, and the Bean-Counter Twins. I must admit I've never seen a Town Councillor be openly racist in any remark or act? Have you witnessed anything specific?

Posted by Rosieo6, on 23-05-2007 14:43,
I haven't heard that rumour.(racism in local government)Would have thought it would be picked up by the papers etc The RNLI can't get funding from national lottery as not enough ethnic minorities are saved in a year, is one that I have heard.

Racism is in the eye of the beholder. My two children were recently asked to 'pretend' to be racist to a imaginary black child as a school excerise. I am proud to say that their idea or racially abusing a black person was to comment on the style of pullover they were wearing. It transpired that they were obviously struggling (along with a few other class mates) to understand why someone would be considered odd or different because of the colour of their skin or where they genetically originate from. On the down side, they do struggle understanding the mechanism of an AK47 and explosive bullets :(

so tuzo, you do have another bee in your bonnet about something...i suspected that you'd opened this discussion in order to correlate racism and the 'unwelcome feeling' you obviously get here...maybe if you checked your attitude before spouting your ill mannered tripe -you would see your feelings of paranoia & alienation have nothing to do with the colour of your skin. i wasn't born here but i feel i blend in well;RESPECTFULLY. As for rumours of racism in the council? -say whatever it is you've 'heard'-you've got anonymity! ---roofrats are shitehawks by the way. File under Vermin too.

Posted by tuzo, on 24-05-2007 23:23,
The reason I opened the discussion on racism (mr shack) was because i wanted to know what people on this site thought.. plus i half hoped we might hear from people who had been victims of it. Just before the last local elections I was in coversation with one of the candidates (who was later elected) and he told me that two other candidates, both women and both black had had thier application papers mysteriously ""disappeared"".....he (my friend) is looking into it. I hope the people who know what i am talking about are reading this, for they (unlike me) know who they are. By the way(shack) I dont feel unwelcome paranoid alienated.. should I? seems like a lot of hard work really, and the attitude checking... how on earth do you do that?Do you stand in front of a mirror? Vermin? so passe......whats that anyway except a creature who is after something you want?? blah blah.. I loved the school story mr bat.. great kids, and great hope for the future.. and as for the colour of my skin.. ahh well, you will just have to guess...

Posted by Carlito, on 25-05-2007 14:26,
Interesting how you are the first person to make an issue out of the colour of your own skin Tuzo. Why would you assume that we would be interested in guessing what shade you are? Do you want to start a new poll? Does it matter to you that much? And no Tuzo, you don't check your attitude in a mirror. If you're incapable of checking your own attitude through the usual method of self-awareness, then I suggest you rely entirely on the opinions of others. What would you prefer?

Posted by shagsack, on 25-05-2007 14:41,
didnt really expect you to understand my comments, and have nothing further to say to you.But-you should look up vermin in the dictionary though because, well, you just should! SHAGSACK

Posted by shagsack, on 25-05-2007 15:00,
...by the way you could get along with everyone that matters in this town even if you had BLUE skin, it would'nt be an issue! you would be judged on your personality/attitude as a first impression. . . Oh well, at least you've got your rats and 'pal' realworld to keep you company...is he back yet by the way?, the bank-holiday bandit that he is.

Rumour 1- not heard Rumour 2- Not heard(didn't know there was anyone influential in Powerstock!) Rumour 3- had heard this and a few other big houses besides. Rumour 4- Something to do with man losing his foot? Rumour 5- 'YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS!'(does this include anyone who posts as well?)

Posted by The Bat, on 28-05-2007 19:34,
I think racism is wrong because of the people who treat people differently because of their colour or race, and because of the the people who accuse people of being racist because of their colour and race. I have never experienced racism. If because of that statement you presume that I am white, ... does that make you a racist?

Posted by dizza, on 29-05-2007 06:22,
Im not saying nothing...........

Posted by Carlito, on 29-05-2007 14:40,
No...it doesn't make you racist. Let's develop a pyschometric racism test: 1. Half Empy or Half Full? 2. Suni or Mooni? 3. Stalin or Hitler? 4. AK47 or Semtex? If you answered 'Zeig Heil' to any of the above, and your best mate says you're a bastard then...you're a racist man called Bernard and prefer Bison to Yaks. Blah Blah Blah...no one here is racist everybody so let's stop trying to rat each other out and move on. END OF THREAD.

Posted by The Bat, on 29-05-2007 19:47,
Possibly only a racist would use that predictable END OF THREAD tactic, ................. or would they?

I have worked and travelled extensively in Africa and have been the victim of racism on many occasion. I have been threatened with machine guns, pistols and machetes and that was by the police and a customs official while trying to get into a country with a correct visa but unprepared to hand over any cash for the privilege. That sort of racism is driven by poverty and anger at the white skinned man (although this now include the Indians and Chinese) being involved in the systematic pillaging of Africa’s natural resources. I have seen racism at work in Bridport fuelled purely by ignorance and parental programming. Some people (who should know better) still think it is alright to pepper their conversation with words like paki, nigger and wog and then say ""but I am not racist"" You have to make a stand and ask them what century they are living in as it is not alright. If you allow someone in your company to use words like this without questioning them then you are aiding and abetting their racist behaviour, You too are guilty by association, or by your inaction. To protest is to live, only dead fish drift with the tide When are the great (sic) British people going to realise that we ""ARE"" a multi racial society. Just research the history of our country to understand that we are a real mix and match ragbag of genes.

Interesting,,, how do people feel about Bridport’s love for “Blacking up” The Carnival is coming and I bet you 10p someone will do it. Is this racist? Will the Notting Hill Carnival see the Afro-Caribbean’s “Whiting up” I’m guessing not…..

Posted by tuzo, on 02-06-2007 21:26,
what would i prefer? (carlito) hummm? neither of your suggestions. In fact all your suggetions so far have been jeremy kyle (ish) and bankrupt.

Posted by tuzo, on 02-06-2007 22:30,
Vermin (mr sad) a pejorative term, comes from the Latin Vermis (worm) a creature living out of balance in desired environment, consuming excessive resources...sounds familiar?

Posted by tuzo, on 02-06-2007 23:16,
one more question for mr sad.. i would like to invite him to furnish us all with his list of people who ""matter"" in this town (25th may post)? (what an peculiar remark!)

Posted by Rosieo6, on 03-06-2007 08:56,
To be honest colour of skin is low on list of how I view people.Attitude is something that usually strikes me first or whatever makes me notice them infirst place.e.g.Purple hair, rudeness, shouting, trippin g up a step, nice eyes/smile.(Paranoia that anyone of you could be the next person I talk to!!)

Posted by shagsack, on 04-06-2007 19:54,
so you've been away for a week and all you've come up with is a witless name for me, well done. Your thread has unearthed nothing of the racism you were seeking, just a lot of sound people who know it's ridiculous to judge someone by the colour of their skin. Those that share in such idiocy are to me not worth knowing. Simple; Bigots to me are not those 'that matter'--their views, their politics, their being! As for the 'upstanding folk' you mix with i cannot say. Vermin in my dixionary also mentions 'VILE PERSONS' ...i suppose that relates to rude, obnoxious, argumentative, offensive, superior and petty persons, not just racists. ...when the person next to you in said vehicle commented 'You see a lot of THEM these days' -did you confront him -or go quiet i wonder? ...he could've been talking bout the TRAFFIC LIGHTS!! END OF THREAD said some, i concur. ED??

Hero; keeping the Chav numbers in check Please can you move away from your home territory into Bridport South as Chav numbers are on the increase here, suggest St Marys church tower a good base as you can get a shot towards skilling and cover Sh1ty Poo Square too!

Posted by shagsack, on 07-06-2007 14:22,
Good. By the way, i can't help but notice you've never adressed me as 'shagsack'-- MR SHACK, MR SAD, SADSHACK, now SS... tell me, is it the 'shag' you can't bring yourself to write? will you be punished for it?? --hey, wait a minute have you got a little fish on your car

Posted by shagsack, on 07-06-2007 18:26,
...you also assume i'm a 'MR'... does this mean you are being 'sexist'? HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED 'RURAL SEXISM' IN BRIDPORT??

Posted by tuzo, on 07-06-2007 23:31,
i have seagull excrement on my car (gotta have a with my pair and see if they can influence the culprits) (ss) As for your earlier question about the man in the car and the ""remark"" no it was not a traffic light,it was a black man crossing at the lights, and I did make a comment in reply.. which was ""yes, he is a friend of mine"" (not strictly truthful, however i did know him on a nodding basis) Yes i probably should have said more, you are right, but I was a bit taken aback, we were in a working situation, and it came out of the blue. What do you think i should have said? My point in the first instance was that these insidious comments seem to come from unlikely sources, usually when i have had a few friendly chats on other matters. Easy to take a stand on some eejit in a pub spouting bigotry.. no problem there. As for the business of your name, i dont really know why i dont write it the way you do, will i be punished for writing it correctly ? i dont know, is there punishment for that sort of thing?

Posted by Carlito, on 08-06-2007 10:19,
I wouldn't worry Shagsack, I suspect that it's a simple case of prodding you by not ever writing your name correctly until you raise the issue...which you have. Classic ""Miner"". Def: Mining; Digging away at something until you either hit a dead end or until you get what you were looking for. Tuzo; A breed of bantam. An ugly one at that. Take your filth-covered scaly legs and skanky feathers back to your hutch and peck on someone your own size. Moving On...i note from the BBC news website that some bint has been booted out of the BB house for saying the ""n"" word. Just like Denzlepob_at_work, I expect Endemol are just covering their arses.

Posted by Carlito, on 08-06-2007 10:32,
So you lied and said that the man was a friend of yours. Did you think it would sound cool? Like ""yeah some of my best friends are gay"". Tuzo, you thought that telling the man in the car with you that you were friends with this pedestrian would be more controversial and therefore deliberatelty make him feel uncomfortable about his comment. Very clever...although Tuzo, pretending to be friends with black people in order to create controversy is pure racism is it not?

Posted by tuzo, on 08-06-2007 12:15,
if i was clever (carlito) it was purely accidental. you are making this far more complicated than it need be, i had a second to say something and on reflection my response to his remark was more defensive than cool... i was trying to head off a further remark, thats why i asked (ss)what he thought i should have said? and i ask you the same? did not know Tuzo was a bantam, interesting, however i was thinking of the commander of land forces in the north of ireland Sir harry Tuzo (70s) when I joined this site, for reasons best known to myself.

Posted by shagsack, on 08-06-2007 18:44,
did the seagull excrement land on your little plastic fish badge? can't believe you treat them like they're your pets...and you say you've lived in dorset how long??

Posted by tuzo, on 09-06-2007 11:05,
you seem awfully interested in the excrement, (sir or madam ss)not one of your hobbies i hope? the police were looking for someone (a few months ago) who was leaving little packages of same on road in king street. No i dont have a badge on my car, cept tax and parking ones, dont really go in for badges, can usually manage to explain my point of view face to face or like this... badges!???????!! dont be silly!!!! lived in dorset? look at top of thread.

Posted by tuzo, on 09-06-2007 11:13,
I dont treat them like my pets... they are wild animals, and I enjoy their visits, there is sense to this (whatever you people say) instead of having flocks of them i have just the two....cant you see the practical side?( lord or lady ss)

Posted by Rosieo6, on 09-06-2007 11:24,
Apart from ooaargh all the comments on rascism have been on how white people treat black/coloured/asian etc people but rascism is a two way thing as other races have different ideas(usually from religion or culture)on how things should be done.Everyone assumes how they live is the norm and are surprised when people get upset.Maybe the country you live in should determine the rules you abide by.When countries were conquered by others there was no choice in change but if you choose to live somewhere the rules apply.Killing or abusing people is wrong wherever whoever. Why is someone a bad person if they have a fish symbol in their car?Isn't everyone supposed to be treated as an individual? If you support a football team that some of the supporters have caused trouble for it doesn't mean all are bad.It comes down to personality in the end.No I am not a group hugger(I have a dread of personal contact with strangers!)I have an opinion.

Posted by tuzo, on 09-06-2007 11:51,
I will give you another story, if you have the patience Same situation (in car,at work, man next to me) Nice enough bloke although he told the most teeth waterinly boring jokes (you know the type?) I said ""where did you used to live?"" he said ""Essex"" I didnt remember the town.. then as he was about to get out of the car to make the delivery, he added ""we had to move.. far too many of THEM...."" the penny dropped..a bit of a puzzle as he had told me his wife was of mixed race. I said nothing. Next week, same man, same car, same me...New comment this time it was about the Bosnian refugees, and how disgraceful he thought they all were...I still said nothing. I asked to be moved from working with him, and explained my reasons, (which my boss totally understood) I still see this man, and he has no idea why I was moved.

W**ker Tanker (4X4's) Mews What we need is a good strip joint and sex shop as the Royal Oak chavs don't cut the mustard!

Posted by Bentley, on 12-06-2007 08:36,
While I admire your honesty you are a bit of a moral coward Tuzo Rather than tell this person to his face that you were concerned that he was a racist, you went behind his back, snitched him into your boss and yet the ""nice enough bloke"" goes about his day with no idea that he is considered a racist bigot. No doubt you nod and say hello every time you see him, with a nice cheery ""alright mate"" thrown in for good measure just to ensure he remains in ignorance of your true feelings. Unless people using such spineless behavior as yours actually say something then bigotry and racism will remain as a terrible blight on our society. This is not just about you Tuzo, although you have admitted your rather gutless actions, as there are many people just like you who would rather hide in the shadows and ""tut tut"" in anonymously rather than say ""you appear to have mistaken me for a racist and I think you need to know that I don’t care what colour peoples skin is or where they come from just as long as they come in peace"" I find your behaviour as reprehensible as that of the racist and if anything more damaging, at least with a bigot you know what you are dealing with.

Posted by tuzo, on 12-06-2007 19:50,
i saw a cowpat (carlito) with a clock set in the middle, it didnt really work, on any level, although its owner seemed quite pleased with it if the wife had been nordic welsh I would not have mentioned it. urbanites only? the first man was a dorset farmer.

Posted by tuzo, on 12-06-2007 20:01,
you are hard on me (ooargh) but maybe rightly so, there are two other factors I have not mentioned here which prevented me from speaking my mind, which you might or ;might not have taken into account. HoweverI wonder if my speaking my mind at that point would have had the effect you suggest, wouldnt that very act been more about me? What is racism anyway? Fear? Hindsight gives us all better scripts..however i dont regret my response (or lack of one) As for nodding yes i do that, but dont go as far as ""alright mate"" the jokes were capable of making time stand still ......little birds fell out of the trees stone dead....

Posted by Bentley, on 13-06-2007 05:40,
So what are the two factors that prevented you from telling the person that you didn't want to be mistaken for a racist? I can hardly take them into account if I don't know what they are. Telling someone that you dont share their opinion is not about having an ""effect"" as bigots rarely change their views (thats why they are bigots) but it is about letting them know that you don't share their views. You wanted to open the debate so keep it on track and debate it

Posted by Carlito, on 13-06-2007 12:11,
Tuzo - could I have a dose of whatever you are on please? Which planet are you on? What little birds? Which trees? Are you slaughtering birds? And how dare you ask what racism is! YOU started this bleedin' thread, YOU tell us! BNP-style racism is based on fear...they are generally afraid (fear) that British people are being systematically diluted, and that within 50 years there will be hardly any white people left. This, of course, is absolute lunacy! I remember the Today program interview and it was the first time I'd heard Eddie actually laugh out loud to the response of the interviewer! Classic!

Posted by shagsack, on 13-06-2007 21:22,
well and truly put (Ooaargh). tuzo, what are you going on about now??? I for one am truly bored of your PAP!! Write when you've got something constructive to say, otherwise the link you started (for whatever reason) will just be all about you, Babbling. Listen, --to whats written without pouncing so defensively and you may learn how to actually deal with those morons properly. just a thought.

Posted by Rosieo6, on 13-06-2007 22:36,
So everyone on this site has shopped a drug dealer, wife beater, litter lout, dangerous car driver, potential racist, the bloke in the office who pinches 'the odd thing'etc. I will recognise the halo's shining out....

Posted by tuzo, on 14-06-2007 16:37,
i think rosieo6 makes a very valid point, and wonder what you all have to say to it? Oh carlito, what can i say.. ? the jokes, the jokes they were so tiresome... i imagined birds falling out of the trees, it didnt really happen... and (ss) i guess we all deal with morons in our own special way?

Posted by goccibos, on 15-06-2007 12:25,
To intergrate our Eastern European fellow humans will be given packs on how to be British, that is smoke fags, drink larger, wear sports gear, beat the crap out of the town on a Friday night, get up the duff when you are 14.......we are a nation of chavs. What an example we give to Europe. Yes I'm a racist snob...I hate chavs I think mixing is good for the health of the Country!

Posted by Carlito, on 15-06-2007 13:16,
Nah Goccibos, you're Chavist, not racist. Actually, thinking about it, considering that Chavs have such a well-defined culture, maybe they ARE a Race in their own right? Is Chav-hating a race crime? Is Race-hating a Chav Crime? Is Crime-Racing really Hate-Chaving in another guise? Discuss! (yawn).
