Coldcut (Matt Black and Jonathan More) started the mighty Zen Collective in London fifteen years ago, and have been preserving the "quality first" ethic ever since. Along with sister label Big Dada, Ninjatune are responsible for bringing the likes of Roots Maneuva, Hexstatic, The Herbaliser, The Cinematic Orchestra, Kid Koala, Amon Tobin,
Ammon Contact, Funki Procini and Mr Scruff to the UK market. The label is like a tapestry of sound - styles represented include Funk, World, Modern Classical, Jazz, Hip Hop, Brokenbeats, and Drum & Bass. In Mr Scruff's own words, "there's no chaff in there, it's just people who do what they do really well and nobody's doing anything quite the same." Ninja Tune's influence on the mainstream is bigger than you may realise and its reach extends into daily life with surprising frequency. As well as making underground styles and production marketable for the CD-buying public they remain a favourite port of call for film production, television, advertising and marketing companies keen to align their wares with authenticity and quality. You may not have heard of the name The Cinematic Orchestra but you'd no doubt recognise their tunes from somewhere - be it from a film, advert or TV spot. Having such a rich pool of talent to promote, they also put on some of the best live shows on the circuit. All in all, a force to be reckoned with and a jewel in the crown of British music. |
