TROUBLE IN PARADISE E-mail

ImageAdam Edwards at the Sunday Telegraph has hammered the final nail into the coffin by not only plagiarising Vanessa Thorpe’s Notting Hill On Sea article, but by continuing to celebrate the area for all the wrong reasons! Again he refers to Hitchen and the mystery of the famous cinema patrons. He interviews a rep from Humberts who gleefully reports that 50% of house sales over the last year have been to Londoners.

He reports there to be a plethora of deli’s and wine bars. The reality is, THERE ARE NO WINE BARS, and THERE ARE NO DELIS (the Dairy Maid doesn’t count!) And fails to mention our surfeit of charity shops and chavs.

To top it all – the only few words taken from Bridport Radio don’t present any arguments and are purely a nod in our direction. The article is an INSULT and you can read it HERE

We need to contact Adam Edwards and outline the fact that he has totally misrepresented Bridport in the national press and that a balanced argument needs to be published. We MUST ACT QUICKLY. The nation MUST know that Bridport is hostile to its new image. You can imagine the headline! “PEASANTS REVOLT AT TELEGRAPH TRASH”.

Not wanting to upset anyone - but isn't all this fuss about ""Townies"" the politics of envy? Do you really want Bridport to remain an insular place where only locals can live - with no place for new blood? The property debate isn't just relevant to Bridport. I work in the centre of London - I'd love to live in the West End - but I can't afford it- I have to live in the suburbs and travel nearly an hour and a half to work each morning. That's the world we live in. Without tourists and second home owners Bridport's economy would suffer big time. You pour scorn on Hugh F-W, but the truth is his TV shows have made Bridport and the surrounding area somewhere for tourists to visit. Ask the publicans, B&B owners, the kiosk owners at West Bay, the council who reap the parking charges etc etc - all these businesses rely on this money. Without it many pubs would simply close. I understand some of your inverted snobbery, but most of your views are simply ill informed , childish and backward thinking. Of course I'd love to see the young of Bridport all live in affordable housing - but take off your blinkers and look at the whole country. It's not just your town that has that problem. Instead of sniping and complaining why not embrace the Notting Hill On Sea image? Look at St Ives - the town is a thriving community that actively encourages the artistic and gastronomic trade - why can't Bridport do the same and make the town a prosperous and energetic place?

The article was in Saturday's Torygraph actually. When is this blasted cinema going to open?

You'd think they'd spell Hitchin's name correctly. Bring back the West End Dairy and the Gorge, I say.

This isn't a New Thing. Artists, writers, media, actors, musicians have always known about Bridport. They gravitated here without the persuasion of hyped up articles about house prices written by national newspapers. They found it for themselves and kept it a secret. Only the discerning were informed - not the masses. Robin Day, Chris Chataway, Kenneth Allsop, Ronnie Barker, Jimmy Edwards, John Hurt, Charlie Watts, Georgie Fame, George Melly, Ronnie Scott, Lynne Reid Banks (The L-Shaped Room-a socially significant 1970s novel) all had either homes here or were culturally attracted to Bridport. This was thirty years ago -and not last week. I reply to Real World's assumption that there is no New Blood here; insular; only locals? There are many of us New Blooders who arrived here in the 1970s, and earlier, from London and other cities, started businesses, bought exisitng ones from' locals' who were ready to capitalise and retire, we got on with it, intergrated and we are still here. Tourists have been coming to this area for years. This is not a New Thing Either. Maybe now they are a different type of tourist? Able to afford three houses for the price of one? Leave them empty for most of the year just earning big money for the peak seasonal letting weeks. Why do they do that? Why don't they do short term tenancy lettings so they were full all the time, providing homes at affordable rents for people who have jobs locally, families? They could probably get the same income over a twelve month period as they do for an unreliable peak season. Competition must be intense for holiday lets - considering how many houses there are. Have I made any sense here?

Dear Mrs Simpson, Crewkerne is the new Bridport? Give us a break, where are you gonna moor your R.I.B.? Chard is the new Streatham. (Mrs Simpson is you a man?) Cameras everywhere....

Real World - You've already upset me! If whittingstall fell off the face of the planet, local pubs and businesses would not suffer a bit, why he gets stick is because he portrays this area as a bunch of wurzels who will fix the cylinder head gasket on his Landrover for a ham sandwich. Can't find accomodation in Bridders? It looks nice in NH see: www.nottinghillhousing.org.uk

QUOTE] ""Not wanting to upset anyone - but isn't all this fuss about ""Townies"" the politics of envy? Do you really want Bridport to remain an insular place where only locals can live - with no place for new blood?""[
The problem is locals can't live here, unless you bought your house 20 years ago for 2 groats you're screwed. I am in rented propery and have been trying to save a deposit for years to get a flat in Bridport. I've finally given up and bought a place over the border in Somerset. I have been blown out of the water several times by ""townies"" making a full cash offer for a property. Piss off to Poundbury where you belong.

Hello Real World. How dare you...JUST HOW DARE YOU! We are FULLY aware that Bridport is not a special case where it comes 2nd and 3rd home buyers pricing locals out of the market. This does not change the fact that in terms of the ratio of the average salary to the average property price, DT6 is at the top of the list (and there is a list...it's just I can't find the damned thing at present!...maybe someone could help me out...Rustic, u know about this...could you supply a link?) We are simply upset because articles and publicity that portray Bridport as a ""Notting Hill on Sea"" are simply going to worsen these problems. It is unbelievably short sighted of you not to be able to see our point of view. I totally reject your accusation of reverse-snobbery. I can't stand reverse snobbs, and I myself am actually a bit of snob, and often enjoy the occassional non-politically correct jibe at the hill-billies among us, but we are all Bridportians and mostly we are all friends, and in Bridport people still appreciate you for who you are, and NOT WHAT you are. That is what Bridport is about. It is open-minded and easy-going, and we are fully aware of how lucky we are to live here. We just don't want to LOSE that! St. Ives, along with Padstow has become soul-less and twee tourist facades. Bridport is REAL. It MUST stay that way. Your comments relating to the effect that the likes of HFW are having on the area are totally naiive and ill-informed and to be honest I feel that setting you straight on those comments may be a lost cause. If people like you believe that HFW's TV shows have made Bridport somewhere to visit then the illusion peddled by HFW has worked, and you have been caught in it, hook, line and sinker. So, Realworld, it appears that you aren't living in such a Realworld after all doesn't it? Finally RealWorld, this is the last place on earth to try and get sympathy for your commute in to the centre of London from the suburbs. May I be the first to stick my tongue out at you and say ""naa na, na naa na!"". The world you live in is certainly one that I wouldn't dream of living in, and I can say that with of the smuggness that I can muster. Pret Sarnie for dinner again is it Realworld? Good luck mate.

In reply to Carlito : I am one of the dreaded second home owners - and get down to Bridport as much as possible. I just thought it would be of interest to hear my side of the argument. I realise I am lucky to be able to afford a second home - but the reason I can afford it is I work bloody hard . When we get down to Bridport we use the local pubs, bars, shops, supermarkets, market etc - we don't turn up with a four by four full of Waitrose groceries. Personally, apart from this website I've never encountered any bad feeling from the locals.Maybe because I appreciate and respect Briport and it's inhabitants.I really do think you should all embrace all this pro-Bridport press - isn't it better to live in a place that is looked on in a positive way rather than everyone thinking where you live is a dump? Come on, lighten up.

In addition to my previous post, I would appreciate it if Realworld and Adam Edwards could read this, stick it in their proverbial pipes, pull their heads out of the sand, and eat some humble pie!

Yes Carlito - I have read the link you included. So what is the answer? I expect you see the owners of second homes as the reason for young people being unable to afford housing. And I agree, second home owners are a factor. What is interesting is a few months ago the BBC ran a feature re: second homes - and one of the points it brought up was that no seller - whether they were a farmer or local refused to sell to someone who wanted the home as a second residence. If someone who is Bridport born & bred won't play ball and only sell to locals - what can be done? I repeat, I am sympathetic to the situation - I'm no hard hearted capitalist - I love Bridport & West Dorset and hope to eventually move down permanently. The housing siutation is a national problem - the anti Notting Hill On Sea factor is inverted snobbery and a negative way forward.

WELL Mr Real World, there we were happily drinking cider and discussing butter when you arrive to save the day and educate us! To summarise Bridport is full of xenophobic provincial hicks living in a town that lacks energy and prosperity; secondly we need to lighten up whilst also pulling our fingers out and working harder to improve our “dump” and finally its our fault anyway cause we sold you the house. Made any mates down here? Had any conversations? Or just flashed your cash and ordered food. You are a lost cause with no understanding of what makes a community. Please don’t move here permanently. (p.s. I’m popping down next weekend to see how you Wurzels are doing!)

OK. Point taken. Bridport locals hate anyone who wasn't born within the sound of the Town Hall clock. I came on this site as a ""new"" Bridporter trying to integrate and understand the pulse of the place. All I've been met with is a flood of petty hatred. I won't return to this site. Good luck to you with your negative bitterness. I realise you'll all pile in now with ""Who does he think he is - coming down here with his money - humiliating us?"" Open your eyes you inverted snobs.

Here we go, let the Londerners buy 2nd homes down here, allow locals to live in them rent free, when the Londerner comes darn ere for his 2 weeks the local can fly to Spain for said period. Sorted. Simple solutions from a Simpleton. Cameras everywhere.......

Posted by Carlito, on 29-03-2007 10:13,
Realworld: What's the Answer? I'll tell you what the answer is. Sell or rent your 2nd home to a local family that really deserve it. With the capital, you could afford to live closer to where you work, and won't have to commute for 90 mins. Then we'd all be happier. Oh, and finally...next time you visit. Come and join a couple of us for a pint in the George and we can REALLY have a proper debate about it. Then we can be drunk and end up not caring...which is why Bridport is primarily alchohol-fuelled. happy days...

When I was younger I was given the chance to buy my council house and as it was the only way to get on the property ladder I took it.New council houses should have priority over other New builds and holiday(to let seasonally)homes. Also if a firm has agreed to build a percentage of low cost housing then dropping the number to be built and avoiding having to have low cost shouldn't be allowed and should be transfered if a new buyer takes over the project.Another thing that may be a good idea is that when new council housing has been built the majority should go to existing tenants who have proved they pay rent behave etc over x number of years.

Awww... for a moment I was nearly feeling a little bad that not even one of us stood up for him. NOT. Good ridance eh? Right...where's the next verbal punch-bag coming from?

Posted by Morning Loves It, on 29-03-2007 19:28,
I hope Real World, that when you let your second home in Bridport to your high earning London friends and relations for a break in such wonderful surroundings you don't take cash from them and, if you do, declare it to the IR in a proper manner? Of course you do.

what a horrible attitude carlito.. telling people that everyone would be happier if he?she moves closer to London,do you speak for everyone? and cold comfort offering the person the dubious pleasure of drinking with you.... my experience of people banging on about being local is that usually they are not local at all, a little loco perhaps...
