The 19th Annual "John Spencer Memorial gig" Friday 2nd Febuary at Freshwater Caravan Park. Back in 1983 a bunch of local muso's wanted to play on a Sunday lunchtime. This bunch of lads became "Custers last (blues) Band. The original piano player was one John Spencer, an ex navy fast jet pilot.Sadly John died on december 29th 1988. The band decided to help the family with some of the funeral expenses and to this end arranged a memorial gig on the first Friday in Feb. 1989 at the Arts Centre. We needed to raise £350 to pay for the headstone.
All past and present band members showed up and played for free. The event raised over £700 which gave us the slightly difficult situation of having a surplus of cash that didn't belong to us ! so it was decided to put the cash into an appeal fund and use it to help young people and live music. Here we are, years later still doing it. We have spent many thousands of pounds putting a bit back into the community. View gig poster... |
