CARNIVAL COMPLAINTS E-mail

August 2006 - Waldorf & Stadtler has stepped down as Bridport Radio Mayor in protest at the “shoddy excuse” for a Carnival Procession. He is quoted as saying: “It’s meant to be the show piece, the cream of the crop, but as far as I could see, it was nothing but a 15 minute onslaught of papier-mâché and majorettes!” Waldorf and Stadtler have said they thought that on previous years, the procession has been getting more and more disappointing, but this year it has hit an embarrassing “all time low”.

Image“I simply don’t understand why the procession goes ahead with such a poor turnout of floats. Sooner or later, it’ll be one ridiculous light-bulb-encrusted float, and 10 yards behind, a  5 year old prancing around in a Tae Kwon Do outfit...coughing in a cloud of generator fumes!”

But it wasn’t all bad news…

Waldorf & Stadtler’ continued to say “I was very pleased with the turnout for the Torchlight procession. There is something very special about the walk to the bay with those river-of-fire views obtainable from the near Bells (the spar shop) and the few points down westbay road. On arriving at the end of the torchlight procession, the sheer amount of participants and people getting involved and enjoying the evening far out-weighed the shoddy show on the previous day. It goes to show that you don’t need to spend money on floats and light-bulbs to do something meaningful. Give a few thousand people a flaming torch each and a St. Johns Ambulance crew.”

Waldorf & Stadtler’s successor is yet to be announced but no doubt a competition of some kind will decide the winner.

well our ""esteemed"" mayor has given up already!! this is the man who says people living in london inn hamlet should put up and shut up about the traffic on the A35 in that area, a real ""sound advice, helpful bloke"".... NOT. and now, in his exalted position as our mayor,he decides that he, as a mere spectator thinks the Briders carnival is a dead loss. Is he going to do anything about it? nope! is he concerned about anyone else doing anything about it? Nope. Would be better off without this stooge who wants the glory but not the trials of being a mayor? yep!! get him out now i say, but please, since losing the election for the post i stood down, on the grounds that the electorate would be happy with a mouth-piece rather than asomeone who might be a little more active, and thats still my thoughts on the matter. thats it except to say good bye and fare thee well MR EX_mayor Waldorf and Stadtler,(named after his chickens!! thats funny innit?) doug the hat

re my msg to Brendan Hawkins, i spoke to the ""man"" today, tuesday about the rubbish hes dumped in the car park, guess what he told me? ""F**k off"". well its now in the hands of other people, who are used to this sort of behaviour and know how to deal with it, so too bad about your bad attitude Mr Hawkins sorry

Quote ""I haven’t, so far, found a way to carry a shopping basket while on crutches."" Well, I would've thought a rucksack would do the job, and would be cheaper than a PMV. Remember they can't accuse you of shop lifting until you have left the premises!.

carlito, its just a larf mate dont take it so seriously, learn to recognise humour !!

Perhaps then, with our esteemed leader crest-fallen, these meetings can be hosted in a Quaker fashion, with no real leader at all and everything being agreed my committee. For example: ""Who here is in favour of The Bat having the almond danish?...those in favour show your hands....and those against....ah we have a draw"" ""Could those in favour of The Bat splitting the Almond Danish with Oooargh say 'Aye'"" ""AYE"" ""Very well. May you enjoy your pastries and be well."" ""HOORAH!"" etc. etc. You can see where this is heading. And Doug The Hat, my sense of humour was stolen by a non-indiginous variety of deciduous tree over by the London Inn Hamlet and taken to Chideock where it died of traffic fumes and boredom.

Being associated with the late Waldorf & Stadtler, may I remind Mr The Hat that the position of BridportRadio mayor is an entirely fictional post and holds no public weight in real life whatsoever. However if any SUCCESSOR to Waldorf and Stadtler should actually make a REAL difference to the individuals who choose to live on a busy main road and then complain about it, I shall be interested to see exactly how this is done. In addition, and to elaborate on Waldorf and Stadtler's comments on the Carnival; it has now come to light that the Torch Light Procession held on Sunday may be THE LAST. This is because, due to new regulations, the event has become impossible to insure. This means that the only way a further torch light procession will happen, is if 'the people' organise it privately with free torches and hope that the police will resist arresting thousands of people next year for amassing in groups of a threatening number. The Carnival Procession is not funded by any one body and it is the entry fees that are putting people off getting their own floats together. It is public apathy that has killed the carnival weekend.

Can I join the Conservative club committee please? I am a staunch Labour voter with strong left wing tendancies. My hero was Joe Stalin. I also would like to go out on a limb and put myself forward as the sucessor to Stadtler and waldorf, (who I never rally jelled with as they poo pooed my idea of placing a sniper in the belltower of the town hall clock). Incidently, if voted in I would research the possibility of the council creating a full time sniper post (possibly open to job share and full cresch facilities for single sniper mums) with a view to sniping off the wheels off that white van that parks on the traffic lights on market days thereby creating a danger to motorists and pedestrians alike. I think the Bridport Carnival procession was good apart from the fact that the last collection vehicle was designed to encourage people to throw coins from the pavement (how the heck do they get insurance for that one!), I mean it's only a matter of time before someone loses an eye. I saw one young lad in St Swithins Road who had been hit in the face by a happy coin throwing member of the crowd. What we need in the next procession is a sniper float designed to represent the belltower of the town hall. That way the sniper on the float could snipe any one in the crowd who looked like they might be about to throw a coin.

Well done to the Bridport Carnival commitee, the content could always do with some improvment, but surely thats upto the local people maybe, some of the members on here could make a effort. The torchlight was great as usual. Well done

Well that's told me (us) then hasn't it? I'm wondering whether I should visit Husskey for a detention after school or stand in the corner of shame whilst reciting the 9 times table. I admit that my comments relating to the Torch Light procession being cancelled are based entirely on hearsay and rumour. I also admit that my comments relating to the cost of entering a float for the procession were based on random blokes whinging in pubs. But I presume they were complaining about the cost of putting a float together and not the entry fee. What is more disturbing about Husskey's tirade is that he/she appears to have no respect for the opinions of others, nor an understanding of every persons right (in a democratic society) to freedom of speech. Accusing the editors at BridportRadio of condoning every view they publish is tantamount to accusing Dutch or French newspaper editors of being anti-islam for printing controversial cartoons. Honestly, do you truly believe that the editor condones the use of Snipers positioned at strategic points throughout the town to remove drug addicts and badly parked vehicle drivers? What is more, he/she writes entirely on behalf of the Carnival Committee, so I can only assume that her colleagues on the committee feel equally as strongly about stifling opinions that they may not necessarily agree with. Surely, in defending the committee's efforts to produce an entertaining successful Carnival, he/she is only underlining their failure to achieve their goal. You don't get points for effort alone outside the cosy confines of the Conservative Club Husskey. Results count! And nothing you can do or say will change the fact that the majority of people I know who spend 30 minutes watching the Bridport Carnival crawl past every year, do it ENTIRELY for the cringe factor. If it weren't for the Bridport News, sugar-coating everything it prints to keep the town folk deluded then the need for an open forum such as BridportRadio would not exist. This site is for real views, and real people, (and a few entirely surreal ideas). So if you can't stomach the truth, you'd better not read it.

In response to the comments recently allowed to be posted which are the views of the contributors but are obviously condoned by those that run the site (Not true - read Terms and Conditions - Editor) as they have allowed them to be published As far as the committee is concerned there are no plans to cancel the torchlight procession. (We spend a whole year arranging licences, insurance, police liaison, marshals, barriers, routes, you name it, so the suggestion of the public organizing it is ludicrous.) People put a lot of hard work and effort into preparing carnival floats and costumes, however grand or small – we put the framework in place for it to take place but rely on public support to provide entries. The procession had the same number as previous years and was the same length – when we marked out St. Swithin’s Road on Friday night we ended in exactly the same place as 2 years ago. There is no charge to enter the procession its free – in fact we give prize money of £50 to the winner and £20 to the runner up in each category. Oh and on the rubbish front – we haven’t used the particular buckets shown for 10 years. When we went to pick up our rubbish from the fete field some kind people had dumped bags and bags of their household bags which we then had to pick up and dispose of. Why not get your facts right before you post unhelpful comments or even better if you have such strong views, come to Bridport Conservative Club at 8pm every other Tuesday from 5th September and join the committee where you can actually have some input and do something positive instead of sniping from the sidelines? We are a small voluntary committee who organize this event for the benefit of the community because we want to. We put in hours of our own time (perhaps your contributor would like the job of sweeping up South Street at 11pm on Saturday night) Still this is from a site which allows comments such as How long before the council put signs up at West Bay saying ""no drowning without permission"" to remain posted which I/we find extremely offensive in light of recent events. This statement has been written on behalf of the Bridport Carnival Committee Ltd

further to the subject of carnival, is about time that people who winge put the money where there mouth is and help rather than critisise, husskey does speak for the carnival and i agree with every word

Posted by The Bat, on 23-08-2006 21:12,
As long as they don't blind someone by throwing coins at them from across the street, i am all in favour of people helping financially. I take it there is no insurance for the event? Or if there is, the coin throwing float was not mentioned to the insurers. PS. Is there any chance of my joining the Conservative Club committee? I would campaign for a communist state of Bridders on behalf of those errant tories. :)

im sure they have a rubbish dump/recycling centre in South Street maybe they should learn to read then they could find it or maybe they are just ignorant low lives

I think it is so sad that people love to knock the carnival, if all those that have written bad comments put as much effort into designing & entering a float into the carnival we would havea better show piece for the town. I think the carnival committee puts a lot of hard work into this for no personal reward. Ok it is to raise money for charity but this does also benefit the town, how many pubs and takeaways were busy that night? but how many pubs & takeaways had entered floats???? The only niggle i have with the carnival is i would love to see it revert back to the original route.

RIGHT - THAT'S ENOUGH!
To Recap: Some people thought the carnival was rubbish, some thought it was great, all agreed the torchlight procession was fab.
You are all entitled to your point of view it's called ""Freedom of Speech"" and many have died to uphold this right.
BridportRadio allows people to comment on local issues and that is what they have done, you may not agree with some things people say but you cannot take away their right to say them. (unless they are defamatory, racist, etc...)

Now why don't we just accept this, move on and think of suggestions to make next years carnival better than ever before? - Ed

Posted by The Bat, on 25-08-2006 18:14,
I think the carnival was great (apart from the dangerous coin throwing collection vehicle. If anyone thinks the carnival was rubbish they weren't in St Swithins Road prior to the event kicking off. Everyone was having a great time, there was a very strong community spirit and that's what it's about isn't it? Anyone who feels it was rubbish should contribute to make it better. Simple.

Posted by mobycm, on 04-09-2006 17:46,
...is the carnival still the middle class on floats with the working class throwing coins at them?

Posted by andy head, on 08-09-2006 07:15,
Does anybody think there could be a link between the humourless, po-faced stridency of the tone of the carnival committee contribution above and the lack of widespread community involvement in the carnival, in what is generally such a vibrant and creative little town? Farewell Waldorf & Stadtler and thank you for your parting gift of delightfully gentle controversy.

The best free parking space in town is outside Framptons the butchers right next to the traffic lights. Of course you have to have a van with the words Framtons the Butchers on the side and be able to slip thye traffic wardens a bit of of their favourite ""MEAT"" now and again. The special bonus of parking here is that it stops the traffic from dividing into two lanes (one for West St and one for South St) so it is a major contributory factor to the ever increasing gridlock coming up East St.

I do like the spiderman band will they be back this year? BTW you can't make the carnival any bigger by leaving a quarter of a mile between each float.

paragraphs lads please....... or it just looks like the kind of wallpaper you have in your homes
I am sure you want to be heard, but apart from you longsuffering families I am guessing the rest of us have little patience with your wall to wall views on all.

Right everyone. Form an orderly queue. It's CARNIVAL TIME again, and my word what an enthralling feast of delights we have in store for us this year!

I see the coverage in the BN is already hotting up (ho ho). First one to hang themselves on the bunting wins a Round Table rogering and a night on a westbay pedalo with the Mayor (or prizes to the value of £5000).

God almighty the misery of it all. I'm going to liven the proceedings up by setting up a second home stall in bucky-doo. Every punter gets glassed by a well concealed chav. He's quite cheap actually - works for pepperami fire-sticks and white cider.

Anyway if anyone is interested in funding the use of a giant bouncy castle, that when fully inflated fills the entire length and width of south street, making all carnival antics much more exciting please contact admin@carnivalcollapse.com

Finally, I hear Lidls are doing a float this year to rally support for the inevitable store. It'll have 12 supporters of the store chained to a wall on the trailer with highly volatile nitroglycerin in one hand and a bastard itchy rash on the other. You want more CHOICE HUH? Where there's a CHOICE for you!

Oh - and Communism works. China can ban millions of cars and stop work in hundreds of factories at the drop of a hat. If we could do that in our crappy democratic airy-fairy politics we'd all be fitter, greener and very late for work.

CHEERS!

The Carnival!Well i don't look forward to it.If i go to watch this year i will make sure i take something to numb the pain, and it won't be paracetamol.

Posted by tuzo, on 06-08-2008 17:42,
tis not in the english psyche to celebrate shrove tuesday, not since the reformation i am guessing?
They should stick to what they know.. lovely country dancing, burning barrels of oil and hanging drawing and quartering pehaps?
It all looks a little stilted to me, as the peculiar torch light in silence, like lemmings to the fast food blokes in west bay?
The chinese, and so many of them to consider? and Bush making threats on his way out of office, how charming of him. The cars will return the factories too and the disenters will be dealt with promptly, only country i have observed that can get an accused to sign his own death warrant in triplicate, now that is real co operation and we might learn from this/
Though I learn nothing myself except how different we all are.
ah well... crisis what crisis?

sadly for me the carnival is as about as much fun as afternoon tea with a half dead aunty, diry mugs, soft biscuits and "how much better it was during the war". Mind you she probably has a point.

I suppose for all the voyeurs its a chance to see a troop of exhibisionists on display and for the rest of use a chance to say "wasn't that float in last years procession?".

If I was God fearing I'd pray for strength, as I'm not I'll be watching the TV and plotting a war against the chav invasion.

ENJOY

FFS sad, i'm embarrased, wish i'd stayed at home..........mind u the 3 floats that turned up were.......well.. 1hr passing. thank god for the Batman Bournemouth band.
