SW Quad Plans Thrown Out E-mail

Apparently the plans regarding the redevelopment of the South West Quadrant have been 'THROWN OUT', at a meeting in West Bay yesterday (27/1/10) at 4.00pm! Yep, it aint gonna happen - ever! "Legal reasons..." was the quote I was given. So it seems the artists, the Trick Factory and many other small businesses will survive (for now). But the land owner allegedly reacted angrily to the news and has pledged to put up rents (constructive eviction).

Have you had a snoop around the area recently? You should, there is a lot going on in this characterful area. Watch this space for a full report...

Thrown out on a legality? Hard to know whether we've been cheated, or reprieved. Was looking forward to seeing the plans for a mini-town of 4-storey blocks of flats - complete with reduced bus station - challenged by the planning inspector, but now it's all to pieces again and this time the landowner, Milord Hayward of The East, is reportedly very unamused.
Look. St.Michael's Trading Pigsty is in a terrible state and is no joy either to visit or (for some) to work in. But it's affordable and allows 200+ Bridport residents to earn a living, much of it really skilled and specialised work. There's room to start a modest new development without knocking anything down. Can't anyone sweet-talk the old codger into backing off from his overblown scheme and submitting plans for something more modest, less contentious, and which would stand a much better chance of passing planning approval?
Nice and easy does it.
Well that's what I think anyway.

St Michael's is everything I love about this town; rough around the edges, find anything you want, cultured, Arty, left field with a dash of puddles, out of date but in vogue, "V's" up to the world.....you get the pic. Oh and friendly.

St Michaels is a dump, but it does provide jobs. Whats the point of building flats? Maybe it'll be ok for all the people that lose their jobs, they can claim benefits and live in the flats free of charge. On the other hand, keep it as it is. Ok it's no oil painting, but its low cost units are good for the town. These businesses may not survive in high rent units. Keep St Michaels Trading Estate for business.
