SUMMARY

National Knife Amnesty

As previously mentioned Dorset Police is supporting the national knife amnesty, which runs from 24 May through to 30 June 2006.
The campaign is targeting young adults aged 14 to mid-20s, particularly those who may carry a knife or blade as a weapon out of fear or peer pressure, in an effort to challenge the knife-carrying culture.
Over this first week alone 108 bladed articles and weapons have been handed at stations throughout the Western division. A total 26 items were handed into Bridport station; this is very encouraging as some of the items surrendered include prohibited articles and offensive weapons. Anyone discovered to have been in unlawful possession of these articles in public could have been given a significant sentence in court if found guilty.

It is stressed however that people will not be prosecuted if a knife or blade is handed in during the period of the amnesty.  We want to make Dorset safer and make Dorset feel safer by removing these weapons from the streets.
If you would like to hand in a knife or blade, then please do make sure the item is wrapped in thick paper or cardboard before it is placed in the special bins located at police stations across Dorset.

If you have any information regarding the above offences or any other crimes, then please come forward and help us with our enquiries:  it may be your evidence, which successfully secures a conviction.  Instead of accepting that crime is part of the Bridport society, let’s give the courts the facts and allow them to decide.

Contact the police station direct, or speak to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 – all calls will be treated in confidence.
