Theft shoplifting Failing to appear in court Theft of a motor vehicle SUMMARY National Knife Amnesty
Dorset Police is supporting the national knife amnesty, which runs from 24 May through to 30 June 2006, by asking members of the public to hand in knives or blades to police stations across the county. The campaign is targeting young adults aged 14 to mid-20s, particularly those who may carry a knife or blade as a weapon out of fear or peer pressure, in an effort to challenge the knife-carrying culture. While it is recognised that there is not a large problem in Dorset with young people carrying knives or blades as weapons, Dorset Police are supporting the national knife amnesty campaign. The last thing we want is for people to carry a knife or blade. If they feel threatened, the worst that can happen is that they will use it and they will regret it for the rest of their lives. I would encourage those people who do possess or carry knives or blades, to please surrender them at one of the bin placed at Bridport police station or at others around the county. There may be a number of knives or blades belonging to people that have been overlooked or forgotten. Perhaps they have come into the possession of their present owners through the death of a relative. It is stressed that people will not be prosecuted if a knife or blade is handed in. We want to make Dorset safer and make Dorset feel safer by removing these weapons from the streets.
If you would like to hand in a knife or blade, then please do make sure the item is wrapped in thick paper or cardboard before it is placed in the special bins located at police stations across Dorset. If you have any information regarding the above offences or any other crimes, then please come forward and help us with our enquiries: it may be your evidence, which successfully secures a conviction. Instead of accepting that crime is part of the Bridport society, let’s give the courts the facts and allow them to decide. Contact the police station direct, or speak to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 – all calls will be treated in confidence. PC 2232 Scott McGregor Community Beat Officer
