Denis Violet didn’t need to look far for inspiration to take part in this year’s New York Marathon on November 2nd – he is running for his four-year-old nephew, Cade who has a heart condition and any money Denis raises from the race will go directly to the British Heart Foundation.
Denis said: “Running a marathon has always been something I’ve been interested in doing, but Cade gave me the added reason to give it a go.
“My father, David also suffered from a heart condition. He died four years ago, so I’m running in his memory.
“I turned 50 earlier this year and that also played a big part in the decision.
“I’m a keen runner, but this will be the first time I’ve attempted the marathon distance.”
Training is going well though and Denis has managed to complete a 20-mile run as part of his training ahead of the big race.
He said: “People tell me that if I can run 20 miles I should be OK for the full distance, so I’m quite optimistic.
“It’s been hard work, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”
And Denis aims to make every mile of the 26.2-mile race distance count – he aims to raise £100 for every mile completed, so £2,620 in total.
