CHARTER FAIR 2008 E-mail

ImageThe 2008 Bridport Charter Fair will be officially opened by Mayor Martin Ray this Saturday 5th July at 10am. The Mayor will also be presenting the prestigious Charter Award, designed by local sculptor Karl Dixon. Over fifty nominations have been received, recognising the valuable voluntary work carried out in a wide range of local sports.

Free performances in Bucky Doo Square begin with the Rex Trevett Band at 9.30, followed by SingAcapella (10.35), Stompin’ Dave (11.15), Bride Valley Band (12.10), some of whose members will also be performing in the Sidmouth Fold Festival, sensational young Hip Hop group ‘Ways of the Mouth’ (13.10), and Mitch Norman and Friends (13.55), one of the hits of last year’s Charter Fair.

ImageBMX champion Rob Ridge and friends from The Trick Factory have constructed a super top-secret ramp that will be unveiled and put into action for the first time. You won’t believe it until you see it. Also in a pedestrianised South Street, over twenty-five charity stalls will be raising funds for worthy causes

More stalls, with an Arts and Crafts and Re-cycling theme will be found in the Arts Centre, as will the Charter Fair Community arts Project. This is a free event, organised by Youth Workers and Community Artists Red Smith and Bob Middleton, and supported by Youth Worker Debbie Gale. Running from 9.30am till 1pm, Primary School children will be given the opportunity to create fancy dress out of re-cycled materials in time for the afternoon parade in the Borough Gardens.

Following last year’s successful introduction of the Borough Gardens as a dedicated area for younger children, the Lyric School of Dance and the Bridport Dog Training Group will again be giving demonstrations in the ring. They will be followed at 2.30pm by the Recycled Fancy Dress Parade., when everyone taking part will be presented with a commemorative medallion. This event has been sponsored by the Menders.

Activities in the Borough Gardens will also include a bouncy castle, “Beat the Goalie” with Bridport F.C., face painting, coconut shy and a soft play area provided by the Children’s Centre.

In the evening young bands from The Humph Sound Studio will be performing at the Youth Centre to raise funds for the Charter fair. £2 on the door. 7.30 start. The line up includes ‘Ways of the Mouth’, “Free Radicals” and “Steve Irwin and the Stingrays”.

The Charter Fair Committee gratefully acknowledges the support of main sponsor Castle Builders, and of The Menders, Footeprints, Bridport Arts Centre, the Youth Centre, Bridport Rotary Club, the Volunteer Centre, the Children’s Centre, St Johns Ambulance,Bridport Town Council and West Dorset District Council
