The Governors of Mountjoy School have recently been made aware of a review by the County Council of their committment to rebuild the Special School. The County Council have promised both verbally and in writing to rebuild the present premises on many occasions and have assured the parents and staff that this is a firm committment. Money has been set aside aside for this purpose. We have learnt that this plan has now been submitted to the ruling Cabinet of the DCC for fresh consideration.
The Chair of the Governors Ivan Kent said "We are furious that unelected officers should try this backdoor method to overturn the public promises of the elected Council Members. The school was built in the late sixties with a projected life span of twenty five years. We are now well past that deadline and the building needs replacing. We have a suitable site already owned by the County Council adjacent to the present school building. The site is a designated medium risk flood plane but the building could be raised to cope with that. Once again we see the disadvantaged children in our society treated in a way that is unfair and selfish. The Governors feel betrayed and angry at this whole u-turn by the County Council and we hope and pray that they may yet do the right thing and rebuild the school. From the Mountjoy School Governors.
