LIDL BY LIDL

German supermarket giants Lidl have recently unveiled plans for a new superstore in St Andrews road near Travis Perkins the deal will allow Travis Perkins to replace their headquarters (Part of the old railway station) with new buildings and trade counter outlet. There was a presentation by Lidl in the Arts Centre on Saturday, April 5 '08 from 9am-5pm.
Bridport Radio member RoyZap Says "Where do I sign up for the boycott of out of town stores?"

"When one of the benefits of Bridport is the town centre shops, why would be want to follow nearly all the other towns in the country and have it destroyed by shops away from the town centre".

But surely one LIDL is not enough judging by the amount of chavs in the village.
Perhaps an ALDI next door as well?

We can't have all the matress burners fighting over the discounted meat isle...

Yorkes Food Hall...(was the name of the supermarket where Blockbuster now stands)...and before then...I can't quite remember.

If it were a Waitrose then I wouldn't have an issue. They do great Sushi and a fab Prosecco. They actually have a "local food" section that isn't some stupid 2 meter aisle hidden away (like at the co-op).

But let's say the Dairy Maid started doing Sushi and Prosecco...I'd bin Waitrose.

Thanks guys, trying to remember the name of the store was keeping me awake at night..sad! Remember Liptons (I think) where Boots is now? Class. Or the garden centre where the co-op is??

Back on subject; I think the point I'm trying to make is that the town is evolving to keep up with modern needs, which is good. Whether we are ready for another supermarket is another thing, I mean how does the co-op stay in town? Its car park is always half full but the store is empty!

LIDL may be pikey but there are lots of people in the town who can't afford Morrisons. They also do cracking bottles of Wychwood Black Witch stout in Weymouth at £1.29 a bottle! Having said that, do we really need another supermarket?

There are super local shops agreed, but the difference is they shut at 5pm when I am leaving work, so if I need a loaf of bread I HAVE to use the supermarket, c'mon local shops - open later and you'll get the business.

Lord Foofoo here, my learned friend in high places has reliably informed me that the Germans are coming to town. The wheels of bureaucracy have been oiled, Herr Lidl has an assurance that any opposition will be 'dealt with', and local officials will be 'comfortable' for years to come. Local officials met at a secret location near Berlin several months ago at the invitation of Herr Lidl. Once discussions had been completed the official entourage was escorted to the airport in Herr Lidl's fleet of Bentley's (Herr Lidl being a shareholder of the Bentley marque), after boarding Herr Lidls private jet and a quick flight to the UK, the party were then treated to a 3 day (all expenses paid) stay at the 'Mandarin Oriental Hotel' (a snip at £3,997 each per night). A leaked memo has disclosed that there will be 3 local celebrities at the opening ceremony, furthermore they will have personal parking spaces allocated 'for life'. No names are available as yet, though they are known locally as 'the pikeys on trikes. I demand that a pointless movement headed by a prominent green person, or many inconsequential small green people, in a big green carnival-like line of snakes and dragons and musicians singing and playing badly should march up and down the streets, and wave banners against this so called supermarket. It's not Lidl, its massive!
Yes, lots of banners are required to prevent this occuring, saying things like, like 'no supermarket thankyou', and er erm.. 'go home whoever you are'.
And another thing those charity shops, awful sushi, or was it pot pourri.
Lyme Regis for years resisted the supermarkets, resisted the bribes of swimming pools, car-parks, told 'em to bugger off, and remained in the dark ages of the small trader. Result, for a long time local trades flourished, 3 butchers, several grocers etc, all locally supported. Unfortunately with the export of local youth, rise in property prices, the family trades are checking the economics and the tourist dollar is removing the practical shops in favour of gift-points... A great shame. But the character of Lyme Regis has arguably remained stronger than Bridport in the last 20 years, with our second hand centre, multiplying chavs and boarded up boozers. If Lyme managed to resist the temptation to change, so can we. Sign the petition, and be prepared for outright direct open warfare if peaceful means fail. Shed blood for bridport, raise the new crap red and yellow flag etc

Co-op, Scummers, and soon to be Lidl, bloody hell it's as though Bridport is trying to become the centre for all the worst supermarkets in the world.
It says something about a town when Morrisons is considered to be sophisticated.

If it wasn't for the supermarkets I'd starve - all the local shops have shut by the time I come back from work. Why don't the local shops simply stay open later then they'd be of more use and I wouldn't have to buy any of mouldy morrissons poor produce.

Draino if you are unlucky enough to work Monday to Saturday 8am till 6pm then you are entirely forgiven. Otherwise, do your shopping on a Saturday (as is tradition) in the town, and leave the physically retired, mentally retired, trustafarian arty-types, winos and junkies to do their shop in the week.

As one that does work 7/7 and cannot shop between the civilised hours of 0800 and 1800, I actually appreciate the supermarkets, the more the merrier as far as I'm concerned otherwise we'll end up a ****hole of a place like Slyme Regis.

Come on Lidl - I'll welcome you with open arms! It's a free market economy lads! That's what you all vote Tory for. Let them set up and put the greedy local businesses out of action. Food prices are daft - us poor sods on £8ph can't afford the prices that the local shops charge.

Dear Bridport,

After reading the front page of this weeks Bridport news (Lidl effect 'could hit market'), I feel obliged to make comment as a Bridport man.

It seems fair to have ugly buildings built at OUR seaside resort that clearly do not belong there, and it seems fair to tell the masses that our old health centre will be torn down, never mind the waste of money that it all costs in the man hours to build and the materials (lost).

It seems fair to say that you council lot are a bit “about faced” and VERY wrong!!!

Bridport needs more choice in its streets and the good people of Bridport need and have a right to choose for themselves.

After reading what appeared like the same old back track dribble on the front page of ‘the news’, I decided to walk through our market to see if I could find my favourite brand of German bockworst sausage or a bottle of lemon cello or pretty much anything that can be bought from lidl’ s that I like and I couldn’t find a single thing that I wanted…why? Because market stalls don’t generally sell the products that lidl is known for.

The facts of the matter seem to be withheld from the public because the pretty awful excuses being made so far regarding this lidl issue are ill advised and down right see through. If the mayor or councillors do not want OUR town to have the choice that it deserves then just say that stop beating around the bush and serve Bridport, I am sure the population would find that more uplifting than being dictated to week after week.

Time for a change I think…bring on the lidl store.
