Bridport Arts Centre is hosting a major exhibition of textiles by a group of thirteen artists called Losing the Thread. The group was formed over ten years ago and the members come from Devon, Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Oxford and Kent.
Organiser of the exhibition, Beaminster-based Pat Mummery said, “Textiles is an area which sometimes struggles to be recognised in the art world and the group works to push forward ideas in relation to fine and applied art using both traditional methods and techniques made possible by today’s technology. “Each member’s work is a personal journey so our work shows great diversity of character. Pieces vary in scale, style and technique exploiting colour, texture, pattern, composition and structure. Work is generally wall-hung but three-dimensional work is often included. Overall, the work is exciting to look at and reflects the excitement of the artists involved.”
Pat Mummery will be a familiar name to many in her previous role teaching art at the Sir John Colfox School in Bridport. Her career in art followed on from her own fine art degree from Exeter. She has held her own solo exhibitions as well as participating in group shows throughout the south of England. The exhibition is called Diversity reflecting the range of work that has been created using fabric, fibre, thread and paper. From wall hangings to large sculptures, the gallery is full of colour and texture covering themes of landscape, the seashore and the history of textiles itself.
