A University student threatened to blow up Bridport, but could not remember his offensive behaviour due to a previous head injury, a court was told. Police were called to the George Hotel, South Street when Gibran Mangar who had sat at the bar drinking for three hours, became aggressive and began talking about bombing the town. The court heard Mangar said he could take the whole of Bridport out very easily.
On January 30 at Weymouth Magistates Court Mangar, 47, of no fixed abode, admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour, Magistrates imposed a conditional discharge of six months for the public order offence.
...and I thought the landlord was joking when he said, that the union flag he has hung may upset fundamentalists...

I wonder if this incident would have had any coverage AT ALL if it had been a local white Dorset man ranting about blowing up the town and threatening other drinkers? I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT. Carlito - Who said he was black / white / whatever? No-one but you. The Local rags cover every drunk and disorderly / petty case that goes through the courts. This was published as it was slightly out of the ordinary. In deference to you I have changed the articles title.

Thanks Ed. No paper would reveal the ethnic origins of a defendant. But unless his parents were avid fans of Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet (one of the most profound and great books ever written), then it's obvious he's not a Dorset white-trash. My point is that the article leans towards his bombing threats, hence the headline, rather than anything else that transpired, which is simply irresponsible editing on the Echo's part. Anyway - I've probably said enough on this to start a rip-roaring BR debate. So I'll duck out and come back with my go-go gadget force-field if needs be.

I read this article, and I found it interesting, I have never been in a pub in the presence of a man who for reasons best known to himself decided he wanted to blow up the town... How weary of life you have become carlito!! How have we been brainwashed? Or had our supposed intelligence insulted? The story however is incomplete without finding out if a blow to the head or perhaps some unspecified medication is a good enough defense for this behavior? All I see when i go to the pubs in Bridport are the usual BOGS and the growing numbers of ""bridport bonabos"" (who are not as charming as thier animal counterparts!!

I think you are mistaken on this one Carlito. In todays climate of media generated fear and paranoia if anyone of any hue had been arrested for threatening to blow up a balloon yet alone a town it would be reported. I guess it just makes it a bit more of a spicy story if the person happens to look a bit ""araby"" or have a ""funny"" , sort of ""muslimy"" sounding"" name. At the risk of igniting debate, it is very difficult, in what is supposed to be an enlightened society, to empathise with the muslim population when their own leaders or Ayatollas give out the message that Islam is an, open, compassionate, tolerant, thoughtful and caring religion that if you dont believe in, or in any way dare to question, you are an infidel dog and must be killed. It is much the same way that Yankee christian fundimentalism or evangelicalism works, (see carlitos post in yanks go home) except the western press don't see fit to print that. Considering all that history teaches us about the folly of religious strife we don't seem to have learnt much, does that mean we are not evolving and that Darwin was wrong? I hope not.

So it was. My first visit to The George Hotel this lunchtime, enchanted by the lighting, adoring the perfumed candles, the vanished Hissing Coffee Machine and the Uniformed Policeman at the bar in deep conversation with The Landlord. Still enjoyed my lunch. But reading the Echo and these posts has filled in the gaps.

To blow up the whole town one must have access to some pretty awesome firepower, the sort of ordnance needed for that job is not the IEDs of Osamas lot, but the Daisy Cutters of George W's lot. So if I were to guess this dudes ethnic heritage I'd of said USA all the way. But as Carlito said he's just some drunken fool.
