Having just had the unfortunate experience of working with several Americans in Asia, I was rather taken aback by their surprise and indignation when I asked them what it was like to be the most despised nation on earth and who exactly was it that said it was alright for them to police force the world.

To my horror there was much “Godamming” cigar chewing, hand on heart and teary eyed (I kid ye not) proclamations about teaching those, A-rabs who is the boss, and when we have finished in I-rack we will take Iran and Syria out of the game along with anyone else who doesn’t wanna play ball.

{audio}radio/01 _Superstar!_.mp3{/audio}

ImageWE are gods chosen army to clean up the world (their words verbatim). It was after this ill informed, bigoted, ignorant rant that I realised just how much I despise America, the blind, brainwashed ignorance of the American people, and the insidious nature of their disgusting culture and how it has wormed it’s way into the fabric of our society.

This thread is for the good citizens of Bridport Radio to tell us what they think about all things American.

Stolen from the Indians - Farms made praries sand
Not one nation under god
But a corporation
CEO - some stupid sod
American and Iraqie - tow the party line
Or you will be united in Gitmo doing time
Lies, paranioa, fear, steak dinners, guns and beer

Gawd Bless America There isn't a lot that can be said for Americans that hasn't already been said. But in true BridportRadio fashion, there's nothing like milking a point is there? In short, Americans are an example of over-civilisation. Take the human race and divide into segments. You have Pigmy tribes in distant lands that have no contact with the outside world, you have tribes that do have contact, you have developing countries and communities, you have the Far East, Asia, Arabia and Southern Europe. You have northern Europe, and then you arrive at North America. A country that has developed at a rate faster than civilisation can cope with. Modern North America is BRAND SPANKING NEW in cultural terms, and it knows full well that its founders were seeping with history, culture, complex societies, class systems and politics. There is an awful lot of pressure on a society that has fought for it's independence from its founders and decided to go it alone. There is an awful lot of guilt regarding the systematic destruction of the Indians, the damming of live-giving rivers, the slave trade, the apartheid, nuking Japan, and losing the Vietnam War. What all of this amounts to is a nation that is so intensely insecure, that it displays the CLASSIC results of that insecurity across all of its dealings internally and abroad. 95% of evangelists turn to this form of Christianity (with the main task of spreading the word of Jesus Christ and advancing the Christian faith) following years of low self-esteem or insecurity, or some kind of mental breakdown, chronic bereavement, or a near-death experience. To be clear, no one IN THEIR RIGHT MIND turns to Evangelism, and Evangelism is upheld by almost every White Middle-Class American (e.g. the people with any power in the country). Because Evangelism is based on the advancing of the faith, rather than quiet enjoyment of your own spirituality and your relationship with Jesus; Evangelists can respect other's beliefs but quietly KNOW that theirs is the only true belief, and attempt to persuade others to the Evangelist way of thinking. This is far more aggressive than any other religion that promotes its teachings. If you replaced the word DEMOCRACY with CHRISTIANITY in every one of George W Bush's speeches, it all becomes horribly clear. So, in summary, just like a bully at school can often be the most insecure pupil, America sticks its chest out on the world stage, in denial of its own insecurities... - America SHOUTS because it can't stand the noise of the voices in its head telling them they are wrong. - America HITS because the pain on the fist will distract from the pain in their hearts. - America WORSHIPS to falsely justify its own actions. - America SUFFOCATES so it doesn't have to hear the arguments of others. - America LIES to its people, because the TRUTH is too hard to bear. THAT is why Americans are the way they are. Pity them.

My relationship with America all went wrong in the 1980's for me when an American girl abroad said ""wow your like British! I so love your Margaret Thatcher guess you do too?""...what a bloody insult! What have the Americans ever done for us? Michael Jackson? Coca Cola? Britney Spears?

'Tis very easy to criticise Americans. Apart from the big cities on each coast, the country is mainly made up of inward loking, somewhat reactionary folk who have no interest in what goes on in the next town - let alone the rest of the world. I believe that only around 5% of Americans have a passport. But that's not that surprising - it's a big country , with every climate and landscape available to visit within the USA. One thing I don't like is the way theirlanguage etc seeps into ours. If a kid spells the word CENTER in school, he'll be told it's wrong - yet we have Plumb Center lorries whizzing about. It is most bothersome.

When my grandparents escaped persecution and certain death from the Pogroms of Russia and Poland and got on a boat and a train in the early 1900s, their tickets read 'Destination New York' It is said they spent a week at the Docks in London thinking they were in America. The Land Of The Free. I can understand that. They stayed here as immigrants and survived. They just beat The Alien Act of 1905 put in place to prevent any more immigration of Jews. My Dad, born here, always wondered what the outcome would have been if they had reached their promised destination. He visited America in the 1970s and wished they had made it there. He loved the Can-Do Attitude. We visited the USA in the 1990s and it all felt like an episode from 'The Streets of San Francisco' and 'Miami Vice' Carlitos post is correct and thought provoking but I can see the reason why they are like they are. Not the God and Jesus bit but why it was a safe and welcoming destination for people like my Grandparents. If they had stayed in Moscow and Krakow and survived, then they'd have been murdered in the Concentration Camps. Old and useless by the 1940s. I have mixed feelings.

my goodness another overlong rant from carlito! i wonder if he has ever been to America? It sounds like he has been siting in doors reading the National Enquirer and watching Jerry Springer. I have spent a lot of time there myself, New York, California, New Hampshire, Montana and a dozen or so other states, of course some of what you say is true, but old bean it is not the one dimensional stereotypical place you tell us of. If you choose to seek out ignorant narrow minded, brainwashed, politically rigid, low brows you will find them there, but you will find them anywhere you go, you dont have to look any further than your own town. My experience of America was very different, I met educated, interesting, talented, socially responsible amusing people. So before you get out that well weary well worn old brush that sweeps continents into little piles.... THINK? and visit the place, and I dont mean a quick trip to disneyland in Florida on a package tour!

The Americans who have passports and do travel are the best ones to meet. The Americans we've met in China, Russia and some areas of Europe - rarely The Middle East and certainly not Cuba - have been educated, reflective and good company. They were all interested in our views of their country. I feel mean saying the one visit I made to the USA was like The Streets of San Francisco and Miami Vice. Only because there was no Wow Factor. No cultural shock. I felt like I'd been there before, seen it all as everything was recognisable from Films and TV Series. We'd like to return but this time take the train Coast to Coast and see far more.

Tuz, the whole point of a rant is that there is no ""length"" issue, just content and I personally thought Carlitos content to be ""darn cotton-picking good"" however you to raise a reasonable point (unusual for you) Of course in their own country (the good 'ole US of A) you will find some nice people as I have in my visits there over the years and it is a big enough place to have a diversity of climate, landscape and burger joint, BUT, (and lets be honest it is a very big BUT), haven't we all had enough of them and their awful politicians and dire foreign policies now. Just as Russia proved that communism, whilst being a good idea, but, because of human nature and greed, doesn’t actually produce a tenable society so to will america find out that the hideous overt capitalism that they are infecting the world with doesn't work either and most certainly does not produce a workable society.

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in 0 gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300 C. The Russians used a pencil.

My work took me to the US many times during the 70's and I must admit I got on quite well with the yanks, but this was mostly in a working enviroment. Outside of this they tend to be very naive, partly due to news coverage not extending beyond the US. They believe they are the centre of the universe, and the rest of the planet is made up of lesser beings. In conclusion I found them ok, but would never pay to visit the US.

Play what again?

You know. The game.

What game?

The game called “Screw you Buddy” that American society is based on.

Who invented the game?

A mathematician called John Nash working for the highly secretive Rand Corporation in the 1950s.

Didn’t he suffer from paranoid schizophrenia?

Yes he did.

Is it wise to base an entire way of life on such a cynical view of our fellow man?

Read “Play it Again Uncle Sam” and find out.

****************
The Rand [research and development] Program was initially set up by the US military to develop new weapon systems after the war. However in 1948 it separated out into a non-profit making body supposedly to promote world peace and democracy, funded by the Ford Foundation. Because of the secrecy surrounding its work, it soon aroused suspicion as to its real motives, which were not allayed when it was discovered that there were links between its sponsors, the Ford Foundation, and the CIA. One was Richard Bissell, an early President of the Foundation who went onto to join the CIA and oversee the U2 Spy plane program. JFK was later to remove him from office over the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. Another was JJ McCloy, a personal friend of CIA Director, Allen Dulles.

During the 1950’s Rand employed many top class mathematicians who developed a revolutionary concept called “Game Theory,” a system of strategies to be used by two or more players. The game could be applied to any potentially confrontational situation with the aim of achieving a state of “equilibrium,” from which neither player could better their position by deviating from their chosen stratagem. It was initially designed to predict Soviet responses to cold war confrontation but was later applied to all social interactions in society at large. One of its main architects was the mathematician, John Nash, an eccentric loner who had concluded that humans were ultimately selfish and devious creatures who schemed constantly to get one step ahead of each other. So cynical was he of “human nature” that he and his colleagues actually devised a board game called “Fuck you Buddy” to illustrate his paranoid hypothesis.

Four players were given 7 coloured chips each with the ultimate goal of capturing all their opponents’ chips. Acceptable strategies included forming coalitions and agreements to cooperate, even though these would all eventually be reneged on. The winner was the last surviving player and the game seemed to work as long as it was understood that the modus operandi was to behave selfishly and outwit your opponents. But when the researchers initially tested the game out on their secretaries, they chose to cooperate, thereby ruining the ethos of the game, but this was conveniently ignored and even though Nash was exhibiting the early symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia, the game was still launched.

Throughout the fifties and sixties game theory was used to justify the arms race and the US nuclear strategy of Mutual Assured Destruction [MAD] which, because there was no all out war with the Soviet Union, was widely believed to have worked. It was also applied to the war against Vietnam, often with genocidal consequences.

But even more controversially the game was used to give credence to the ideas of right wing economists like Friedrich Von Hayek and James Buchanan. These men insisted that even elected leaders and their bureaucrats were only self seeking tyrants with no genuine concern for the public good, and therefore all power was to taken away from them and the populace exposed to unfettered market forces. This would provide one explanation for the witchhunts of the fifties, where any politician even thinking of tinkering with the free market was denigrated, and in some cases terminated. The idea of society or community was consistently rubbished and the citizens of America encouraged in believing they were simply mindless consumers whose only meaningful interaction with their fellow man was in the market place. Their primary responsibility was therefore to themselves and their families who were also encouraged to consume as conspicuously as possible.

One of the end results of this game has been a rapid decline in social mobility where the income of the bottom 10% actually fell in real terms, with the middle class seeing a small rise in their living standards and the over class seeing a quadrupling of their assets. This, unsurprisingly, has led to a destabilision of society with rising levels of violence and other anti-social behaviour as the “have nots” battle the “haves,” for their slice of the American Pie. The winners get to live in gated communities while the losers are herded into the ghettos of the inner cities.

But not content with experimenting on its citizens, the US has exported this dysfunctional model of social disharmony via the Military/Industrial Complex, a cabal of powerful vested interests that basically run America, which has usually imposed it on third world societies around the world under the banner of “globalisation.” This has been portrayed by the western media as a positive force, especially in those areas of the world deemed crucial to US business or vital resource interests, especially the oil states of the Middle East and the “banana” republics of Latin America. This was achieved by citing “expansion of democracy in the region” whilst forcing regime change and unleashing unfettered market forces. This has invariably led to an overclass lording it over long established tribal or community based societies, often with disastrous consequences, including vengeful acts of terrorism.
The game was even exported to Britain by “Ronnie Raygun” in the early eighties and taken on board by Maggie Thatcher. So when she uttered her profound statement "There is no such thing as society" you could be forgiven for thinking that these were the observations of a deranged women but she was merely heralding the arrival of the game to Britain.

But what has happened to those opposing the imposition of the game?

Over the decades there have been many foreign leaders, usually elected, determined to stop their country being drained if its natural resources and its people used as cheap labour. This has been particularly true of the countries of Latin America, a region that the United States has always regarded as its backyard, a repository of riches to be raided at will. Unsurprisingly many leaders of these countries have tried to stand up to this blatant imperialism, often by attempting to nationalise foreign owned businesses to regain control of their economy. This has always been met by outright hostility from the CIA who have helped organise coups and in some cases, assassination, of such interferers in the game.

One of the most successful of these leaders has been Fidel Castro in Cuba. He terrified American Corporations when he came to power in 1959, after overthrowing the US backed Dictator, Fulgencio Batista, and confiscating American assets on the island. They were worried that his example would be followed by others in the region, so the CIA was instructed to get rid of him as quickly as possible, using any means at its disposal. However the US’s involvement in this illegal act was to be hidden at all costs so they covered their tracks using the concept known as “plausible deniability,” the euphemism for framing someone or some group to take the blame. But all their attempts failed and eventually they had to turn to the professional killers, the Mafia, to carry out the contract. But amazingly they too failed.

However CIA assets did manage to infiltrate Cuba to attempt to foment counter revolution from within, the likes of Frank Sturgis and E Howard Hunt, two men who, a decade later, would play a pivotal role in the Watergate scandal. However some of these men, who were being manipulated like pawns in a game, turned out to be, or pretended to be, double agents working both sides of the fence.
One such Agent was allegedly William Alexander Morgan, a man who had been trained at the Atsugi Air Base in Japan by US Military and a few years later turned up on Cuba fighting for anti-Castro forces on the island. Ironically the men under his command initially assumed him to be a CIA plant, so were understandably confused when he suddenly gained the confidence of Fidel and switched sides. Back in the States, in a probably staged press release Morgan was stripped of his American citizenship and labelled a traitor. But one year on, when Castro discovered he’d probably been a CIA plant all along, he was executed.

Following in Morgans’ footsteps was another probable double Agent, Lee Harvey Oswald who amazingly had also been trained at the US base at Atsugi, although a few years after Morgan. He was to make a high profile defection to Russia, only to return three years later, with a Russian bride, whose uncle just happened to be a high ranking KGB officer. Amazingly his passport and citizenship were quickly restored with few questions asked. There is now little doubt that Oswald, or his double, was being manipulated by CIA Agents involved with psychological operations, to play a key role in the assassination of Castro and then possibly to take the blame. But, like Fidel, he, or his co-conspirators, proved too clever and the whole operation was turned and President Kennedy assassinated instead. This whole cock up has necessitated the biggest cover up in the history of the western world, a smoke screen that is still being maintained today. It is high time the US Intelligence community came clean about its role in this disaster but in the meantime read my novel “Play it Again Uncle Sam,” which is based on these events.
