BRIDPORT PARKOUR E-mail

ImageThe acrobatic sport of street running or Parkour as it is also known hits the nooks and crannies of Bridport. Don't try this at home, you'll break something - try it outside.

Expect a sudden run on plasters, TCP and bandages as the silly sods of Bridport attempt to tackle the benches in Bucky Doo and end up spreadeagled across South Street.

You also might want to expect a sudden influx of really lame jokes from fat lazy talentless people who would quite happily see the complete outlawing of parkour in bridport so there is yet another thing they dont have to worry about being bad at!

All this talk of suddenness is a bit sudden. There was a crew in Bridport parkouring or street running two years ago, ask the boys from Ways of the Mouth about it. The freestyle sport/art form was made popular by a doccumentry about two or three years ago and was pounced on by the energetic bridport posse as a great way of having a laugh, seeing how far you could push the boundries of your physical capabilities and the adrenilin high that comes from doing that. Far from being new the first recorded instance that I remember seeing of a run up a wall sommersault was by gene kelly in the classic musical ""singing in the rain"". Now if none of you ""yoofs"" haven't seen the dance sequence that involves it I suggest you google it up or search grannies video stash, because as dancing and acrobatics goes it is a gem.

Fair point Bentley, but just to clarify - it was Donald O'Connor in ""singing in the rain"". tricking that back flip. Although Gene Kelly was CGI'd busting all sorts of moves including back flips on the VW GTi advert (loving youtube). Also Wikipedia has a very informative piece on Parkour.

America is the only country in the world to pass from barbarism to decadence without passing through civilisation first. I wonder who said that.

I remember a version of this activity taking place in Bridport several years ago. Starting at the snooker club, participants had to race to the paint store in Rope Walks and back, hence the name Brolac Challenge. As the Brolac Challenge would never take place much before half past midnight, by which time all runners were completely bladdered, some trick moves were on show - jumping over cars, falling over kerbstones, colliding with fellow pedestrians. The highlight was always the breathless vomit-off which always seemed to take place at the finish line, back outside the snooker club.

In response to bently, yes ur right there was a crew a while, something to do with pete dixon and bower. having said that though most of this footage was shot at a similar time and the vid itself was made about 2 years ago its jus damien only got a hold of it tuther day. we were not trying to make a statement about it being fresh to bridport, it was just our take on the whole thing and a better exposure of some lesser known spots.
