Fair play to the man, well worth supporting! who the hell eats those 2 packs of 4 breasts for £5?

I buy my free range chook from Washingpool (yum), someone said to me ""Too expensive"" to which I reply ""No, mouldy morrisons is too cheap""

Who are these random people who buy a whole bloody chicken every weekend eh? The same morons who buy fish every Friday and keep 100 days worth of Fray Bentos pies incase of an air-raid I expect. The trouble with Hugh is, his cause is always so nauseatingly just but so sensationalised that the drama dilutes the message. Consumer power won't work. It never bloody does. What needs to happen is the government to legislate at EU level to ban the intensive chicken farming and subsidise farmers to be able to go Free Range. The supermarkets will be forced to sell free range chickens cheap to maintain sales, so the farmers will be stuffed unless the balance of cash is filled by the government. It's tricky. But I get the feeling that converting Axminster to Free Range isn't really a start, it's more a TV show idea, and it really needs to be shouted about by someone far less loathsome than HFW. Incidentally I always buy organic, free range chicken, not because of the moral edge, but because they taste so much better...and my eggs come from my own chickens. P.S. - Good job that cameraman happened to catch Hugh weeping last night, and what a coincidence the editor made a meal of it. Funny how TV works isn't it?

(Carlito 3)There's a lot of these random people eating that crappy (rottisserie) chicken (all hormones and broken bones) I was one of them til I saw how they were treated, so hopefully a bit media coverage will stir up enough people power to start the process towards more ethical food. I told my veggie friends years ago, ""don't eat soya it's all genetically modified"" But no they had to wait 5 years to read all about it in the Telegraph before they woke up to it (and look at them now). I don't know where I'm going with this... ...I know - In the ""cull the gull?"" debate I suggested we harvest seagulls and sell 'em to the grockles as local delicacy ""Sea Chicken"" Mmmm mmm ...""this is not any chicken, this is free range sea chicken, with tar and chip wrapper sauce...""

Carlito, I would love to have found something in your logic or argument to disagree with to get a bun fight started but I can't. I will have to finish with a rather heart felt but slightly limp ""here here""

Why call it ""chicken out""? they still end up dead in your ovens,or dribbling down your chins, it seems a case of hair splitting, they either end up on rule 42 or in an open prison.....where is the other choice?

Big Brother or this? We all make a choice, and at least Hugh has the balls to do it. Well done. Marshwood Hillbilly. Hetrosexual Male.

I keep my own chickens. I don't eat the chickens 'cos I am a veggie. I eat the eggs 'cos I am an Ovo-Lacto Veggie. Free the chickens!! Chickens have rights !!!

big brother? (Orwell? or tv twaddle?) I dont get the reference. i see it from the chickens point of view, and the fact that nobody has castrated Hugh FW, makes little difference to them. i am however totally delighted that you have worked out your sexual orientation (Marshwood hillbilly)7) a relief to all of us I am sure>

Posted by Rustic, on 14-01-2008 08:38,
Thank you marswood hillbilly for first of all informing us of your staunch heterosexuality in your tag line but then you muddy the waters of sexual preference by mentioning Hughs genitalia are you absolutely sure which side you are batting for? And for the record Hugh probably didn't have the ""balls"" to do it he had a bloody great fat budget from his production company and a load of work done by researchers, assorted lackeys and forelock tuggers and then in true TV drama edited style, cries for the camera, and we all go Aaaaah poor chap. Lots of people don't have the money to choose where their chicken comes from, lots of people don’t care and lots are too thick to give a damn and think that Colonel Sanders is the bloke that made elvis famous and sold southern fried chicken as a side line. The whole thing just like river cottage is a showbiz sham

Still, it's a sad fact that food is too cheap. If your average bloke on the street kicked up a fuss about poultry welfare,he would not be heard. At least the River Cottage lot are able to stir the media and create a take on the issue which grabs your attention. The majority of folk CAN afford free range, they just choose to spend their money on fags or nikes or other useless cr*p.

The foul('scuse the pun) blight on the food production industry that is factory farminmg has been well doccumented over the years and I have to offer grudging respect for Whipping Stool for jumping on the band wagon, all be it belatedly, however you will never be able to legislate against stupidity. There are many things that have un-arguable scientific, medical and ethical facts to say that they are bad for you, smoking, overeating, being a smackhead, believing in god, being from up north, and yet people still do them. My point is that factory farming is there for a purpose and that is to provide food for ""stupid"" people. If they end up dying from some terrible factory farm incubated super bug then so be it, it is just natures way of weeding out the lame.

Finally, a comment! These folk are'nt necessarily stupid, just ignorant. I don't trust scientists, 'cause they are paid to come up with stuff which is often a load of ballcocks. So the un-arguable have just been argued against! Thank goodness we don't all think the same, or else we might become politicians!
