Small and packs a punch - Bridport Arts Centre’s new season brochure is out and it’s a smaller redesigned one, packed with great entertainment. This cultural hub has live theatre and music plus dance, films and exhibitions.
Launching with a film night about African music, Beats Of The Heart, on Tuesday 15 January, it includes two documentaries, one of which features music by Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
There’s more world music with the Askew & Avis concert on Saturday 26 January. Described as vocal loop gurus, vocalists Rebecca Askew and Jeremy Avis are joining forces with Gambian kora player and percussionist Sura Susso of the Sekou Keita Quartet.
Our intrepid reporters put a quick step forward to Sixpenny Handley last Saturday to the fourth Endorse-it in-Dorset music festival. The weather was bright and sunny and the site was already rocking with throngs of multi coloured rave fairies and dance commandos, old punks freaks, hippies and weirdoes. Our first stop was Punk band Fat, Drunk, Stupid who thrashed out some old classic punk which made I feel quite nostalgic, a class act, don’t believe them when they say “Probably the worst punk tribute band in the world” they are great, especially accompanied by beer.

Bridport where were you?! The Urban Lawns Festival in Axminster was a rare treat, 36 fresh and funky bands over two days and a lovely friendly festival vibe right on your doorstep and I only saw one Bridport face I recognised ( well done Paul Eckett). Despite being ravaged by the elements the festival showcased a huge array of fresh and zesty musical talent and DJ’s that know how to get a 40 year old git and his bird giving it some it in the mosh pit.

A groundbreaking arts and science project involving one hundred Dorset males aged 0 – 70, examines what it means to be male and how maleness is perceived in society today and culminates in a multi-media performance event at Southwell Business Park, Portland on Father’s Day, Sunday 17 June 2007. Entitled BOYCHILD and funded by The Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England, this eighteen month long project is led by artist Mark Storor and Bridport based producer Anna Ledgard in collaboration with Dorset County Hospital Arts in Hospital Project.
