THE Bridport Arms in West Bay has become the first Palmers pub to accept payment in Euros for pints of real ale. The move recognises the record-breaking high numbers of German and Dutch tourists visiting West Dorset this summer. The seaside pub is selling pints of Dorset Gold and Palmers IPA beer for 3.90 Euros and 3.60 Euros respectively, as well as £3.35 and £3.10, during the August bank holiday fortnight –traditionally the busiest time of year for the tiny harbour resort (23 August to 5 September). |

A speed camera has been set alight on a main road through a west Dorset village at the centre of a row over heavy traffic congestion. Fire crews were called to the A35 in Chideock, near Bridport, in the early hours after several calls from drivers. A tyre had been put over the speed camera and set alight. |

Dorset County Council has submitted a planning application to extend temporary consent on Bridport's existing household recycling centre (HRC). Although it has long been the intention of the county council to replace the existing recycling facility with a new waste management centre to serve the people of Bridport, the search to find the most suitable site is ongoing. |

More time is being sought to complete a plan to save the Literary and Scientific Institute, the important Two Star Listed building at 51 East Street, which has been empty and neglected since it ceased to function as Bridport’s Public Library in the 1990s. |

BRIDPORT LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTE at 51 East Street, was founded in 1835 as a Mechanics Institute by Henry Warburton MP. Reconstituted in 1855 as a Literary and Scientific Institute, the artist Fra Newbery was a pupil and teacher at the Bridport School of Art run from the Bridport Literary and Scientific Institute building, finally it served as the town's public Library until the mid-1990s.
Over a period of years efforts have been made by various people to seek a solution to the Two Star Listed Building which is on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk Register and which has essentially been empty and deteriorating since it's closure. |
