When I am in desperate need of a haircut and Mark is closed - I have done business with ""Steve's"" down East Street. He too is an interesting fellow - very keen on police matters. He told me he is some kind of plain clothed agent aiding the Police in their work. This is what he told me - he may be a fantasist of course. I have also been 'done' at Uppercuts in Bucky Doo - but alas it was by a dopey bird who kept banging on about holidays and DIY zzzzzzzzz. I have seen Billy Bragg in there - I hope he got a better cut than me,otherwise he may be preparing a new protest CD. As for Mark's haircuts' - I think he's a fine craftsman. He is big on horses, you know.

The King Charles on St Andrews Road for sunday lunch. Travel back to the 1970's when carpets were swirly, housecoats were worn by serving staff and comforting food was served in vast quantities. Expect vegetables well boiled, potatoes roast and mashed and don't go for the large portion unless you've been in training - you may never stand again. Beer not by Palmers is a real treat as well, especially the guest ales.

Let's not forget Mrs Barnes' St Swithuns Stores up North Allington. Hot pies, coal, bread milk - no booze mind. Oh and mind your manners - mrs Barnes appreciates pleases and thank yous.

I second Mrs Barnes as a Business We Love. If children don't have manners when they go in for sweets and drinks they certainly have them when they leave. Lots of leg-pulling and humour from Mrs Barnes herself and her lovely troup of ladies. I dare not buy tobacco in there as she tells me off.

Never been back to the Bull since it was revamped for the middle classes. Oh and Ed I promise to stop slagging the weird lecture season events thing in Symondsbury. Let them have their narcissus. Other great businesses; Skilling Stores for being open when everyone else is closed.

PS I trust you don't read the Telegraph?! That would be a worrying turn of events.

...Another faceless, middlecass, sofa haven. I always fear pubs that change hands, its often for the worse. Even a re-decorate can ruin an otherwise decent boozer. The Woodman will always be the best in Briddy. Freindly, anarchic and entertaining. Tis a pity they no-longer sell a pint of No Smoking at the Bar though. And, on Saturday, what better than a Coffee at The Chapel. Marshwood Hillbilly

D'you know I quite like the idea of The Bull. I know lots of local people who work there and all seem to enjoy it. I like the idea that there's somewhere to go to eat when you want to get dressed up a bit. I like the fact that it's getting described as quirky, innovative, racy, high-camp - not words often associated with Bridport. It's not somewhere I go regularly but I'm damn glad it's there - it could easily have been turned into another retirement home!

I agree regarding the Bull (with AH), it could quite easily have been another death-den for the elderly. I just wish they'd get their act together in terms of organising their staff. Half of 'em don't seem to know what they're doing most of the time. Was there on NYE, which was pretty bouncy earlier on, but petered out very quickly in the wee small hours. A suprising and slightly interesting ratio of 3 visitors to every local though! Hats of to WEE for a fab gig.

I'd just like to mention the fantastic service i recieved with Matt Harvey at Crepe Farm, Symondsbury, what a friendly chap and very high quality metalwork at a very reasonable price, he also recommended the Ilchester Arms in Symondsbury which i also found to be a proper Dorset pub, even the Palmers beer was excellent !
