Why all the fuss about where to site the new waste transfer station? As anyone knows who gets up early enough you can simply chuck your refuse into the street and what the vermin does not eat is ‘magically’ disappeared by the time most people are up and about. Something must be done about this! Let’s not all go running to the council wanting wheely bins, it is unviable (especially as they wasted/lost so much of our money). It is up to YOU the individual to take responsibility for your refuse and make it pest proof. View these photographs...

Some local councils will fine you for putting out your bins too early, perhaps this should be introduced in Bridport. fellow citizens let’s not forget that it is our money that pays for the clean-up crew that has to come along afterwards.

What of our tourist industry? If I was a tourist planning to stay in Bridport or West Bay and arrived early in the morning to see the place looking like a tip, I would keep driving on to Devon.

What of disease? I will not list the revolting detritus dropped by gulls onto roofs and parapets and dragged into buildings by rats

If we refuse (verb) to act then the problem can only get worse, any animal will increase its population if it has a plentiful food supply (think James Herbert and Alfred Hitchcock).

So please my fellow Bridportians - have some pride, have some respect and keep our wonderful town clean.

NB: The litter is not necessarily that of the building it is outside of.

Agree, and contrary to what the Chamber of ""concrete over the meadows for parking and give us your money"" say it's their members that cause most of the problems. So traders; want our custom in these hard times then show us some respect, grrr!!

I could snipe any rubbish bags I see on the street before 8am. Would that help?

I agree! It is our responsibility, and that could just include not throwing food away. NO FOOD = NO GULLS! I don't get it! One minute it's ""We must have a Lidl so's we can buy cheap food"", next minute it's ""We can afford to buy so much food we can afford to throw a third of it away"" Time for some joined up brain cells here - anyone got some super-glue? While your at it, put some out for the flying chavs, stick their s***ing beaks together!

It is bad enough when domestic rubbish is left out overnight, but surely inexcusable when it is trade waste from food outlets & restaurants. These activities should be photographed & published & the culprits shamed. Add to this the dog owners who allow their pets to foul our footpaths.

wandering up east street you might see these people take note of the gulls and thier need to eat litter, and put rugs,or such on top of the black bins... not so when you pass the town hall down south street, I wonder if the weapons analyst, who told me some time ago that there was a lay line that crossed from the town hall into the corner of the george Hotel might have something to do with this problem? i dont know, i love the gulls, they are in a decline, not mentally but in numbers i believe.

I think that the more community minded citizens amongst us should post any rubbish we find in through the letter box of the nearest property next to the offending overspill. OK it might not belong to them, but I’m sure they will do their utmost to find out who it does belong to and put a stop to it.

Surely wheelie bins would cure the gull problem! What are the town council doing about issuing wheelie bins?

Yes, that was yours truly on the front page of the Wip Wop moaning about the scum on the streets (I didn't mention ""launching a crusade"" but it is going that way) read the article here: bridportnews.co.uk/news/bridportnews/4419113.Call_to_clean_up_Bridport_s_streets_of_shame/ I am just pointing out a problem, what is the solution?

These pictures were needed and should provide a valuable service, waking up those reponsible to something that needs to be sorted now. It's astonishing that in this Health and Safety dominated culture, people are knowingly putting out unprotected and dangerously toxic material to be scattered far and wide, week after week. Surely if you did it once and saw the result, you'd find a way around it such as waiting until morning to put rubbish out, gull proof covers of some sort or even buying a bin. We live in the Town centre and it doesn't happen to our rubbish so it needn't happen to anyones. This behaviour is indefensible and blaming our Councils is simply unrealistic. Just because WDDC is responsible for household waste collection doesn't mean the individual has no duty of care at all, let alone the commercial waste producer. WDDC is NOT responsible to the public for collecting commercial waste and only offers it as a service to defray the cost of rubbish collections for the rest of us. This sort of thing undermines those efforts however as time and manpower are wasted with all the clean up work. We all can take pride in Bridport's independant traders and their largely successful attempts to prevent Bridport becoming another ""clone town"". Now lets see them clean up their act with a little environmental awareness and by taking responsibility for this mess.

Wombles may be an option, but what happens when they get as overpopulated as seagulls? Mobs of Uncle Bulgaria's and Tobermorey's stealing your chips and crapping on your washing. Wombling Song

Well done Boss, go for it. Keep the pressure on. Let's photograph and shame, 'cos it's not just a town centre problem. Go round Crock Lane and Asker Mead on a Friday. People leaving rubbish out, in bags, from 6.30pm thursday for a Friday lunchtime refuse collection. Black bags ought to be made illegal, dustbins or wheelie bins only. Gulls should be culled. Have you got a councillor on board? E-mail the photos to that wonderful Mr. ""Tennis court"" Letwin. Environmental Health been contacted? I know Bridport doesn't exist on telly, but let's get them in and knock the doors for perpatrator's comments! Get them to interview the woman in Barrack Street that feeds the gulls. Best of luck and thanks to the bin guys who clear up.

Flash - Okay, I'll give you that one. How about the DISTRICT council? What are they doing about it? and why haven'y THEY issued wheelie bins? And another thing, ... (pause for effect), ... What are the TOWN council doing about that white van that parks on the junction of the traffic lights every market day, thereby totally hiding the traffic light signals to motorists? There's going to be an accident one day, and there will be tears! I could snipe the tyres of this vehicle if anyone thinks it would help?

The Bat - Parking is also controlled by the District Council - you've obviously never had a parking ticket. What a good boy you are!! You could try asking the TC 01308 456722. f you get any joy --post it for all to see

Draino and ted... thier numbers (gulls) are actually down, look it up so no overpopulations get some specs, you might be seeing double/ and as for culling, not permitted by law (yawn) as they are a protected species, as are many other wild life species as well you know, and if you didnt...... read about it, before you open you huge ignorant mouths.

Perhaps Tuzo could supply us with references so we can check his alleged ""facts"" I have Googled ""seagull population dorset"" with no significant results. FACT: I have not condoned culling (Gulls)in this thread have I? I agree with Ed that PEOPLE who feed gulls or allow their bins to be raided are the problem. FACT: As far as culling goes any animal causing a nuisance is classed as a pest and may be dealt with lethal force, residents of Meadowlands will bear this out as last year a council licensed operative shot quite a few seagulls who were preventing people using their own gardens. FACT: Seagulls are wild animals and feeding them (as Tuzo has previously admitted doing) is bad practice and left over and spilled food encourages other vermin (is there a local by-law prohibiting feeding them?). FACT: Tuzo is part seagull as he/she is a loud mouthed annoyance.

This is a situation created by people and one that needs resolving by people. The trouble is people have a tendancy to ignore the responsibility, myself included. So, inevitably, the solution will have to involve a win in both camps. Some gulls must die, and some irresponsible waste-producing people that can't wait till bin day to put out their rubbish must pay. That way everyone is either happy, unhappy or both. Such is life. How about a nest cull, followed by WDDC-supplied giant wheelie bins. Now excuse me whilst I get back to my new invention, an Aircraft ""black box"" that a) floats and b) ejects automatically from a plumetting aircraft. Dragon's Den here I come!

well draino its a bird called larus argentatus (prob something to do with the silver in thier feathers?) records state we have 131 thousand nesting pairs in the summer and 765 individuals in the winter months. first recorded in the 8th cent. I know i know at least 131 thousand people who irritate me, but not for the reasons you seem to find important, maybe you should look more keenly at these birds, and maybe i should not have spoken so sharply to you, i dont know you, but i do get very weary of these dense comments.

Hmmm... Wikipedia entry ...refuse comprising up to half of the bird's diet ...maximum age of 49 years recorded.(!) More facts PDF with population data Interesting stuff but if humans do not protect their trash from vermin they should be fined.

well i am delighted you can read as well as write draino, i think you might have extended the poosible life of these birds, but hey i will let you away with that one, how about looking at how much light comes into thier eyes, and how they can see colours that we cannot see, ultra violet light, they are bright and intelligent and of course oportunists like ourselves, we should have some common feeling therefore, but with all species its not just the world of the homo sapiens or is it up your street... I dont know, its of course also the season of the grunts.
